@liztai @trollball Apparently it’s because of Sabah/Sarawak and (at that time) Singapore joining the federation. So East Malaysia + West Malaysia = Pan(Big) Malaysia

However only people in Malaysia, Singapore, Taiwan and Hong Kong uses 大马. People in Mainland China uses 马来, which can easily be confused with “Malay”.

@liztai I do think that much of the cultural nuance is lost in the show and while I disagree with many of the author’s views, the fun of reading the books is to see things from a different & very prevalent perspective. On the other hand, I do think that Liu Cixin gets pretty misogynistic in the third book, and his writing style leaves much to be desired. The first book is very much just a warmup & crazy things are coming next so I’d love to see how they tackle the next seasons!

@liztai I haven’t watched the Tencent version but have read all three books. I do agree with you that the Netflix version lacks a sense of dread and despair that’s very prevalent in the books. The love story part was actually from the third book but was needlessly dragged on in the show, and so is the sexy robot (in the book she’s not sexy but instead a polite Japanese lady in kimono - which is a commentary on Japan reforming its image).

@liztai I believe the birds abandoned the nest on my balcony after another pair of bird tried to steal their nest haha, I actually saw them fight & chase each other around right before they abandoned the nest. So I can’t tell for sure which pair of bird is coming back.

@liztai The sunbirds on my balcony abandoned their nest a month or two ago but earlier today I saw them checking out their old nest again.

On Threads, one argument I keep seeing Taiwanese people make regarding their perceived “overreaction” to China is “we’re not the one with all the power to annihilate the other side & keep making threats to actually do so”.

Feels like this argument could apply to Malaysian racial politics as well. Tired of seeing people using both-side-isms when one side has all the political power and can freely make threats of violence while everyone else has to grovel and try not to “overreact”.

@liztai I tried it out before and liked it, killer feature is being able to push websites you trust further up search results and websites you don’t like further down. But I’ve too much subscriptions at the moment already so sticking with Google for now.
