@Gargron@anon_opin I think it depends what it is. A friend of mine was widowed and when he tried to sell her vinyl collection, no one was interested. Collectors didn’t want it and it didn’t sell online even when broken up. In the end he distributed it to various charity shops.
@foone In British English , the word gaylord is derogatory slang (making fun of a member of the LGBT community) and would be considered offensive. (I had to look up what it also means in Canada/US). It’s true that we are divided by a common language.
@dansup@kyva@pixelfed@heyazorin That’s an excuse, when Lemmy (which is still in beta) introduced similar breaking changes they gave three months notice to allow instances to update (and it still wasn’t possible for some of them to do so)
And from a user experience point of view, how do you expect people to test a beta if they can’t log in ?
Developers usually oncentrate on getting the basics right, release the app and leave major changes until the next planned version.
@kyva@pixelfed@dansup@heyazorin I agree, it’s poor design to have an app that crashes because of a minor version number change. A change to an API that causes a crash should be a well thought out major change with plenty of notice. The current scattergun approach to development is not acceptable.
@dansup I’m not a fan of this for three reasons: Being centralised goes against the very nature of the fediverse and leaves it open to bad actors. There’s already a successful verification system as used by Mastodon. At the very least it will cause confusion. These paid verification systems don’t really verify you only show that you’ve paid.
@dansup@terrencefoxfur@pixelfed@NafiTheBear@loops You keep saying the pixelfed mobile app will be out of beta, but somehow it never does. It’s always just around the corner. Also, what happened to the messenger “sup” that was coming soon last year? I’m just concerned you lack focus and all this pressure is not good for you.
@dansup I don’t understand this. I see on Threads ordinary people doing ordinary things. Perhaps you’d like to explain what it is you are worried about?
@fediversereport Another thing to bear in mind is that (unlike Mastodon) there is no requirement to have more than one admin. Some reasonably popular instances have a single admin and some of those seem to have gone missing.
What will happen is anyone’s guess, presumably when the hosting isn’t paid they’ll just stop without warning. If they don’t get into legal trouble for not keeping their house in gear.
@dansup@shlee I’ve read what you said and it stereotypes older people as not using social media in the same way as other age groups. That’s plain wrong. I’m really disappointed.
@dansup@shlee That’s not what you said, you said you weren’t building for Gen X or older because they don’t use social media in the same way. That’s highly patronising and plain wrong. Look at the profile pictures on Pixelfed, there are a lot of older faces and grey hair.
@dansup@shlee I don’t mean this in a rude way but you’ve said a ‘couple of weeks’ and ‘ by the end of the month’ (May) before. From a user’s point of view (who really wants Pixelfed to succeed) it’s a little frustrating. How can I get my friends to use it when it’s not in the App Store ? They aren’t going to use a web site, they want to use their phones. Anyway, moaning over - good luck with your projects.
