@dalias @rainynight65 @cancel much like anything in search, optimization had the goal of driving engagement. From that patterns emerged like optimising for recall instead of precision, or doing away with in session consistency in personalized timelines.

@cwebber @socketwench one thing observed and so far attributed to my own two bubbles was more US ppl on bluesky, more European ppl on my fedi bubble.
As non US myself I found https://not-a-tech-bro.ghost.io/we-dont-need-no-water/ helpful to understand what's happening and paths ahead. So thank you for adding your perspective.

https://dpunkt.de/produkt/zoe-zockt-fiete-fliegt/ ... When under the recommendations of the family's favourite book Ada and Zangemann by @kirschner one finds another great book from @OReillyMedia for kids - another one with a bookmark ribbon in it 💜 (spent an entire evening with the child going through various mobile games popular in class and checking them on the webpage listed at the end of the story to find dark patterns used in the apps...)

@jwildeboer I really, really love the presentation that @kirschner gave in very early 2020 on that exact topic: https://youtu.be/FXlIRJSEqvc?si=fJ27N89XKbCxliXW

@jwildeboer also, licenses are just copyright law - there are many more branches of law available to enforce additional constraints

@mekkaokereke there are Germans that do believe you. Almost a century ago a very young democracy died for lack of democrats - democracy needs people to participate, school is one place where democracy starts.

@inthehands “… it should be clear that improvements in communication tend to divide mankind …” by Harold Innis in Changing Concepts of Time
Someone with a degree in communication science gave me that quote years ago when I was wondering what was wrong with people on social media.
Remember what happened when the printing press was invented, or radio became a commodity?

@inthehands wisdom coming out of Google decades ago: what works with ten users is so different from what you need with a few orders of magnitude more that you'll need to rewrite anyway

@inthehands https://research.google.com/people/jeff/Stanford-DL-Nov-2010.pdf ... Found it. The design for growth, but not to scale infinitely and the 'numbers everyone should know' stuck in my head over the years

@dalias @gamingonlinux likely that's just the tip of the iceberg.
Back when everyone was impressed about Google's reaction to ChatGPT and taking that as a sign that Google feared a competitor coming up with a better interface to search I kept wondering why nobody saw the much more immediate thread of LLMs used for SEO...

@dalias @gamingonlinux what surprises me though is that this SEO approach wasn't spotted automatically and the effect throttled.

@josh @phpledge @FOSSBackstage there were speakers who were happy to see that as well - not only immunocompromised people but also those with things they wanted to do the week after the conference that were important to them so spending a week or two in sickbay really was no option.
Plus those with children where one family member getting sick typically means additional work for a month or two while the infection makes its way to everyone one after another.
Applies to all respiratory viruses.
