"Your ballot has been accepted! Your ballot was received by your county elections office and counted. Thanks for voting!"🗳️

Double checked my ballot, and it's in!👍🏿

Yes I'm in California where the Harris win is fairly certain. But it's important to vote down ballot, because (non-US citizens are not going to believe us on this one, but we swear it's true!🤷🏿♂️) fascists like to run for positions like "school board member" just so that they can ban books like "The Diary of Anne Frank" and "Hair Love."

@mekkaokereke @georgeeyong We had some fascists affiliated with an SPLC-listed hate group run for school board here in very blue Montgomery County, MD in 2022. Fortunately they all lost. It can happen anywhere.

@mekkaokereke Isn't Hair Love the one about the little girl whose mum had cancer and so her dad has to learn to do her hair? Why would they ban that?

@davidnjoku @mekkaokereke psst… probably racism. I don’t want to speak for anyone who hasn’t asked me to, but there’s a lot of racism in America.

      @zakatak @davidnjoku

      Yup.

Watch the entire cartoon of the book, and see if you can figure out why it's banned. (Hint: there is no reason to ban it, other than it's a "Black" story, whatever that means. I have white friends that are dad's that learned to do their daughter's hair too.).

We had openly declared white supremacists running for school board this year.

      Hoping that they get crushed.

@mekkaokereke there are Germans that do believe you. Almost a century ago a very young democracy died for lack of democrats - democracy needs people to participate, school is one place where democracy starts.

Here in Minnesota; we have a man running to unseat a state judge because said judge refused to let him continue to harass his ex-wife.

Which some voters may miss because the judicial elections are way down the ballot.

      So. Yeah.

(Fortunately, almost everyone who does vote there will vote for the incumbent).

@Habigelo @mekkaokereke I've voted in both countries and honestly, voting in Canada is a breeze by comparison. My California ballot this year was six pages, both sides, and the downballot stuff was equally as important (like repudiating Prop 36). The rest of the ballot is generally subject to the most voter apathy.

      So true!
On that note: I found it pretty difficult to find information about candidates for our school district.

I guess that is a good thing, in a way, because nobody has done anything demonstrably crazy, but I wish I knew more. I am going by one article and two websites (2 candidates have a personal website).

City council was easier. We have some obvious anti-housing candidates, and they’re spicy, so they stick out.

I've voted for a grand total of 5 different things in my 26 years as a voter. City, county, national, European, and a referendum on the €.
Anything more seems so weird and unhealthy as a system.

@lerxst @mekkaokereke We seem to have normal local elections here still, where all the library trustee candidates love books and libraries, and School Committee candidates seem to all favor the idea of education, and apparently I live in a freaking bubble, and I'm very sad tonight.

@smach @mekkaokereke We have three school board seats up in my town and five people running for it. There's three of them that are one each a Rep, Ind, and Dem that are what I call the "Sane Squad" who still believe in public schools. The other two are MAGA whackadoodles. I hope the three win. Incidentally the only Republican I voted for, but only technically, since they're ostensibly non-partisan positions.
