@ai6yr Figeaters! (Cotinus mutabilis). One of the coolest bugs we have around here.

Like a regular old 10-line June beetle but breathtaking metallic green.

Don't confuse these with mere June Bugs; they're full-on proper scarab beetles worthy of a Pharaoh.

@larand @ai6yr @moira @cookiesinheaven Oh, forgot to brag a bit...my brother's wife's father, who is a wonderful guy who I've played music with off and on for almost 50 years, was one of the original members of the Lettermen. He chose to finish college rather than touring, so he got replaced.

@ai6yr I've got a 120V stick welder, made by a real brand (Lincoln). Not only is it VERY tricky to get a good weld, it's even trickier to find an application where this is actually an appropriate tool. Basically no penetration at all.

The kind of lighter materials it could handle would be worked far better with a MIG or TIG rig, not a stick. Don't bother with tiny stick welders.

50% of the people who bought tickets over the years to see The Cure actually saw a band called The Placebo, and they enjoyed it just as much.

    @SecureOwl

I can't help adding more to this.

I was in a jazz band that played around the country and world for 35 years. We had rules. We ALWAYS acknowledged everyone working where we were, from sound crew to janitors. We learned their names. We USED their names. We used the front door with fans, not a back stage entrance. We got to know bartenders. Everyone. No one was unimportant. No one. Everyone you see matters.

It's a good approach for life, not just for touring musicians.

@RustyRing @ai6yr @dharmadan Perhaps more accurately...burlap is what the fabric has been called in English for many centuries (it was "borel" in Middle English.) "Hessian" came into being in England much later slang for the same fabric, likely 1800ish, supposedly a fabric associated with soldiers from Hessen-Kassel, the Hessians.

The word burlap remained in use in the US and Canada. It is not an Americanism, and it remains common worldwide.

@elebertus @ai6yr In our case, it's a noise issue. Roosters are only allowed in low-density population areas. Where I live, livestock is permitted but in limited numbers. And no loud animals...I can have chickens or cows or horses but not roosters or donkeys. These are County rules, which can be made more strict by individual cities (I don't live in any city)

Historically, the county had a lot more ranching and farming, so the rooster rules are probably pretty new.

@ai6yr @elebertus Not that I've seen. Next door has had miniature horses and chickens, but I haven't seen a cow. Which is a darn shame really.

I was checking zoning a few years ago when I was offered a free donkey. I wan't in a position to accept, it, but I had to check because, well, free donkey. It *could* be allowed, but would require a permit, essentially meaning they could revoke the permit if there were complaints over noise.

One thing I have really enjoyed on Mastodon is seeing really cool people I know join, and hook up with other cool people I already know from completely unrelated worlds.

The internet hasn't been this much fun since the usenet heydey of the 90s.

@ai6yr The cell looks to have cleared Van Nuys, but it may take a few minutes or more for water to drain from runsways. With BUR's short runways, I'm sure they're extremely careful about that.

Very entertaining tiny but intense cell moving across the Valley.

@ai6yr It's definitely removeable, but you'll have to reserve or lease the adjacent line, have it lifted, and be able to clear it from that section of line. I expect the Historical Museum in Fillmore will end up with it. Although, they do already have a Southern Pacific caboose.
