My goal is to create a private, personal space for sharing photos and videos with friends and family while still offering integration with the wider federated network.
To that end, we've built frequency as a custom, Mastodon-based server with a uniquely designed native app. It focuses on private posts instead of public ones. The most exciting features are being built as we speak, but we’ll have something to share with you very soon!
Hey everyone! I wanted to share a little bit about why I’m building @frequency and what we’re working on.
First, we’re a very small team of two—me as a full-time developer and a part-time designer moving toward full-time.
We strongly oppose the use of addictive, manipulative algorithms & design patterns used by big platforms. Rather than replicating familiar interfaces, we’re aiming to build a more intentional, mindful way of interacting with social media.
I haven't posted much about @frequency lately, as we've been busy rehauling the design and UX from prototype stage to something that feels a little more polished! I'll have some previews to share next week 😉
If you haven't heard of @frequency yet, it's a standalone server+app for private (followers-only), personal photo-and-video sharing on the fediverse. Escape from fb/insta with a more calm, less addictive way to get updates from friends and family ✨
#FediForum is such a lively, welcoming, inspiring event to attend. The way it brings together key developers, researchers, and users of federated specs and platforms is absolutely priceless. I learn so much and have such great conversations every time. My only regret is that I can't attend more sessions at once!
Hey can anyone on an akkoma, misskey, micro.blog, or friendica instance follow @frequency and tell me if you are able to see the photos on posts?
I'm trying to test out an issue with photos with privacy signatures on s3 not federating properly to pixelfed, and I'm looking to narrow down whether this is specific to pixelfed or a more general problem with this approach + federation. So far mastodon and hubzilla instances seem to handle it just fine 🤷🏻♀️
@atomicpoet glad to see it! The first attempts at a new thing can take a while to work out, so I was getting worried that since they hadn’t started this already, it could get deprioritized. I’ll be keeping my eye on their progress.
@jonty this is fiiiine. bluesky is filled with very smart people and therefore they don’t need to participate in open standard groups before they just invent their own!
@Gargron yes!! that's the dream! I have plenty of family who will stay on facebook until it dies, no matter what I say to them... I would love to still be able to share with them and see their updates via ActivityPub
