@MediaActivist my experience whenever I’ve interacted with my UK colleagues remotely is that the call will sometimes start off with someone saying they are sick and that it’s was so-and-so that brought it into the office and then they all lol about it. No concern about it being yet another cumulative COVID infection, no one thinks to themselves “shit that’s me now in a high risk group of having a higher chance of dying of a heart attack or developing diabetes or cancer”.

@MediaActivist it’s not much better here but if someone is symptomatic they will (usually) make some attempt at not infecting their office colleagues by not going in to the office. Maybe it’s 15% more taboo to NOT make others sick here. Maybe. Again, all very unscientific.

@MediaActivist my unscientific findings are that people in the UK have bought into the “it’s just a cold” fallacy more so than other countries - I work with people in the UK (I’m in Canada) and not a single one of them ever so much as thinks about COVID. They just don’t care - getting sick constantly is now normal and expected and even a source of amusement for them.

are there any TV manufacturers that DONT sell TVs that are just collecting information about viewing habits and selling them?

So, the 75 inch Amazon Fire TV is about half the price of any other tv of that size, presumably because it's constantly spying on your every move and selling this data to North Korea or something. Is there a way to remove the spyware? If it was used without connecting it to the home Wifi, and use an Apple TV + blluray player, would that work?

@freemo @DavidM_yeg I get it - lets just end this civilly - i didn't intend for this thread to become so contentious.

@freemo @DavidM_yeg we had the vaccine passport thing here too (BC). But it was not comparable to actual lockdown enforced by the policy as in Athens. Here it was barely adhered to, businesses didn't want the resposibility of policing this, or having to deal with angry anti-vaxxers. I wouldn't call vaccine passports much of a lockdown. An inconvenience for some.

@freemo @DavidM_yeg just my 2 cents here but "lockdown" is all things to all people. IMO "lockdown" is what my parents faced in Athens, Greece - they had to stay in their home and if they wanted to leave to go grocery shopping or for a walk they had to send a text message to a number setup for tracking these things. People would be approached by the police when out and it was literally a "papers please" thing.

@freemo you only talk of treatments. I see no mention of prevention in what you said.

What’s so depressing is that as a species if we wanted to we could wipe out SARS2 like we did with that strain of flu a couple of years ago. Imagine lifting everyone’s lives up with this one action. But no, better to pretend it’s all fine and keep getting sick while millions are denied any form of a life.

Approach to cholera by world governments as if it was COVID: we are working on new vaccines and treatments, please continue to drink the sewage. If you die from cholera we will record it as death by misadventure. Cholera symptoms are mild. Anyone found trying to clean the water before drinking it will be arrested for creating a panic. Everything is fine. It’s seasonal now.

@Npars01 @zoom_earth it’s so sad that these politicians can be bought for so little money. A pittance a year for what? So they can destroy the planet and bring forth fascism again? If you are going to be one of the most evil fucks on earth you’d think it would pay better. Isn’t he like almost a billionaire anyway? What’s 140k to him anyway? Why bother?

If there are no serious repercussions from ignoring COVID and letting everyone become sicker and sicker over the next few year then governments around the world will have learned that THIS is the future model for dealing with all health emergencies, so basically we are all fucked.

So long as there are people who are desperate enough to work while sick, keeping the economy afloat and making line go up for corporations there is no reason for governments to do anything. New better vaccines? Why bother - people have been brainwashed into thinking that they have an immune system that is virtually invincible and vaccines have 5G microchips in them so Soros can track you. Clean air? Why bother - people have shown a willingness to breath whatever shite is in the air.

@atomicpoet @fediversenews you have to ask yourself: is this going to drain high profile large-follower count viral content creators from Twitter? I think this is a GoodThing™️ - these people were never going to join the fediverse anyway.
