I made a patriotic cake to celebrate today.

Presentation rules, but it fails in the eating. I used to be able to make a really nice sponge cake, but for some reason when I try nowadays, it always comes out rubbery (unless there is chocolate in it). Maybe it's just that I only used the whites and not the yolks so as to have a pure white middle layer. Will have to conduct further experiments.

Your PlayStations will have gotten a server not found error, same as if the network goes down. Also you'll have had trouble finding a compatible TV or monitor, since it was all 4:3 CRTs with SCART connectors back then; HDMI won't even have been invented for another four years.

TVTropes has for some time been going down the same road that Wikia (originally Wikicities, now fandom.com) did. I would have posted this on Monday, but I was onl evening shift last week, and I also want to do a whole rambling thread about TVTropes, some of which is relevant to the Fediverse. So here we go.

Maybe it's the types of game you play? My sense is that shooters tend to wear sticks out fast.

(Personal experience: I went through a whole bunch of sticks playing Splatoon 2 and 3, both Joy-Cons and Pro Controllers. My GameCube controllers, which I got year 1, still aren't drifting).

It's probably because they're more mechanically complex. Trackballs need small, fragile sensors which are more prone to breakage than touchpads.

@hellomiakoda It's a custom in Zoroastrianism and Tibetan Buddhism where a corpse is put on top of a platform to be eaten by vultures.

In Tibetan it's called "bird-scattering", but for some reason "sky burial" is the standard term in English.

For Buddhists, it's one last act of generosity. The Zoroastrian motivation is to avoid defiling clean Earth with decay, but nowadays they also emphasise it as a final act of charity.

In ancient Greece, the basic unit of society wasn't the individual, but the household. The head of a household was the oldest man living there, which de facto meant the oldest father—hence patriarchy, rule by the fathers. The oldest man is the one who sets the rules and gets to vote. Women's property was controlled by their husbands, or failing that their fathers, or failing that their oldest brothers.

The Romans largely copied the Greek system, but weren't quite as bad, as women were allowed to control property in their own right (though this was unusual, and they still didn't get to vote).

When Rome transitioned to Christianity, patriarchy is one of many pagan institutions that continued, and was still a big part of the Medieval and Early Modern worlds due to Christendom's lionisation of most things Roman.

My first exposure was my dad's 486 running Red Hat Linux.

I was interested for a while but could never figure it out. In late 2010 I managed to install Ubuntu through wubi on an ageing XP laptop. I expected to just play around with it while mostly using XP but the wifi worked better on Ubuntu and that as that.

I technically had a laptop with Win7. It was a Christmas present from my parents the next year that I promptly installed Ubuntu on.

The Second Law applies to isolated systems. Earth is an open system that is constantly receiving energy from the sun.

I also recall a PBS SpaceTime episode argued that complex life is actually efficient at increasing entropy, because it takes so much energy to maintain local order.

And I'm not sure that's actually how entropy works, but I'll leave that for the physicists.
