After 2 years, my cast iron pan had developed some rough patches that just wouldn't go away. (There had been an incident with someone using a steel scrubber on it.) Decided to start anew. The orbital sander made pretty short work of it. Now to reseason...

It's been 2 years since I got a cast iron pan. It's definitely not as easy to use as teflon, but after getting the hang of it, it's been a great pan. The best part, as I've just demonstrated, is that it's infinitely maintainable. It will never break. It can always be restored.

Okay, we're back in action! Cast iron pan is smooth and non-sticky once again. 🍳

After baking several coats of canola oil onto it in the oven, it feels well seasoned now. It's developed a deep golden colour, which should gradually blacken as I continue to cook with it.

Sometimes the sound and meaning are allowed to be separated, too. This poster for "A Colt is my Passport" writes 拳銃 (ken-jou = hand-gun) but the small letters above provide コルト (colt) to override how it sounds. The redundancy is interesting.

I learned 冗談 (jou-dan = useless-talk) as a word for "joke", but I was curious about other uses of 冗.
I ran across 冗句 (jou-ku = useless-phrase) as another word for joke and it made me laugh...
Wiktionary calls it a "phono-semantic matching", meaning that it manages to be compatible in both sound and meaning with English "joke".
I think 冗句 is an uncommon usage, normally it's written as ジョック like a more standard loanword.

The AI that generated the text for this YouTube video clearly has a different idea of what's "okay"... 🙄 Is this advice for how to block your drains?

Found some leftover hallowe'en candy but I'm not sure if it's safe to eat. Don't people always say not to get your snickers in a twix?

@feld This image was in the built-in BIOS ROM.
I don't know the details of PS1's region/copy-protection, but there are definitely consoles that expect to see a particular copyright string on disc / in memory. Sega Genesis and Nintendo FDS both do this for sure.

It still kills me every time I see the Playstation 1 boot screen. It had a gorgeous sound, really neat visual idea for an animation, and... TERRIBLE SCALING ARTIFACTS ALL OVER THE TEXT??? ლ(ಠ益ಠლ)

Did some digging on the PS1 boot screen revisions.
Apparently they did eventually fix the text scaling at BIOS version 4.0 (late 1997+, SCPH-7000/9000/100)
However, the 4.0 PAL versions introduce an aspect ratio change to the diamond, breaking up those pixel perfect diagonals.
