It still kills me every time I see the Playstation 1 boot screen. It had a gorgeous sound, really neat visual idea for an animation, and... TERRIBLE SCALING ARTIFACTS ALL OVER THE TEXT??? ლ(ಠ益ಠლ)

Did some digging on the PS1 boot screen revisions.
Apparently they did eventually fix the text scaling at BIOS version 4.0 (late 1997+, SCPH-7000/9000/100)
However, the 4.0 PAL versions introduce an aspect ratio change to the diamond, breaking up those pixel perfect diagonals.

I thought I read somewhere that the text on this screen came from the copy protection area of the disc? Perhaps not, but something related to the boot screen came from the disc itself -

@feld This image was in the built-in BIOS ROM.
I don't know the details of PS1's region/copy-protection, but there are definitely consoles that expect to see a particular copyright string on disc / in memory. Sega Genesis and Nintendo FDS both do this for sure.
