I think I’ve found a relatively nice solution for #FediLinks in #Conversations_im.

You can put web+ap URIs into a message (or room description) and ideally a click on those will open your Mastodon client. However if no installed app supports those (the only app that I’m aware of is Fedilab) Conversations will open a browser instead.

Currently no app will create web+ap links but it is fairly easy to handcraft them.

@janvlug #Signal is better than #WhatsApp, but still centralized. The entire world depending on a Single organization is not very sustainable. We have Quicksy and Prav both giving the same convenience of Signal without lock-in. #Quicksy and #Prav users can talk to each other and to any other #XMPP app.

To actually practice the freedom to improve a software, we should be able to self host the server part (not necessarily each person has to self host, but that option can offer real choice).

I've seen a lot of people talking about leaving #WhatsApp. Great!

Only, don't replace one WhatsApp with another.

#Signal and #Threema are centralized services, and just as vulnerable to #enshittification as Twitter or WA.

Instead, use a platform that's standardized and federated - #XMPP, a.k.a. #Jabber.

The easiest way to use it is to install #Quicksy from the Play Store, App Store, or F-Droid.

Thanks to @buster for doing the upgrade. There was a small unexpected down time as database format had changed and we needed to fix that manually.

If you're still recommending #Signal, you may have missed the tech oligarchs' takeover of the US government. The best time to recommend European alternatives was 8 years ago; the second best is now.

Thank you for the clarification. I did state (at least in the convo mentioned) that #XMPP is (but) a protocol.
The FOSS messenger(s) based on it, however, to my knowledge, are but niche apps for the technologically savvy.--No-one of my RL contacts has ever mentioned it (nor represantive sample, OFC.)

@feld another point people miss: unlike on #Signal, #WhatsApp, #Telegram, etc where there is a central server watching all the social graphs of the whole network, in #DeltaChat and other decentralized platforms like #XMPP what a server can see is pretty limited and fragmented, We started talking about activists btw, and having the freedom to choose a server instead a central server potentially collaborating with your enemy is a killer feature
