I need a simple messaging system to install locally so I can get notifications from the #monitoring system when the inet goes down. Which one would be simpler to install? #xmpp? #irc? Something else?

I have a lot of such alarms and use indeed #XMPP for it. I wrote my own #Python scripts with #slixmpp for it, but just using e.g. #goSendXMPP https://salsa.debian.org/mdosch/go-sendxmpp by @mdosch might work well enough.

El #softwarelibre es mucho más que líneas de código accesibles. Es un movimiento que promueve la #libertad, la #colaboración y el respeto a la #privacidad del usuario. Pero, ¿estamos realmente practicando lo que predicamos? Al promover el software libre, también tenemos la responsabilidad de educar a nuestra comunidad sobre las implicaciones éticas de las herramientas que utilizamos.

Es común encontrar a entusiastas del software libre utilizando servicios de grandes corporaciones como Google, Facebook, Amazon, Apple o Microsoft (GAFAM y compañía). Si bien estos servicios pueden ser convenientes por su alto número de usuario, es importante recordar que sus modelos de negocio se basan en la recopilación y monetización de nuestros datos personales. Al utilizar estas plataformas, estamos contribuyendo a un sistema que socava los principios fundamentales del software libre.

¿Qué podemos hacer?

• Diversificar nuestros canales: Exploremos y promovamos alternativas libres y respetuosas con la privacidad. Plataformas como Mastodon, PeerTube o Nextcloud ofrecen servicios similares a los gigantes tecnológicos, pero sin comprometer nuestros valores.
• Fomentar el autohospedaje: Enseñemos a nuestra comunidad a autohospedar sus servicios. Esto no solo garantiza un mayor control sobre nuestros datos, sino que también fortalece la infraestructura de la red libre. Obviamente siempre y cuando nuestras capacidades económicas y técnicas lo permitan. Sería como tener nuestra propia casa en el #fediverso.
• Promover la educación: Organizemos talleres, charlas y escribamos tutoriales para ayudar a otros a migrar a servicios libres y a comprender los beneficios del autohospedaje.

El Fediverso es un ejemplo perfecto de una red social descentralizada y libre. Al unirnos a una instancia de Mastodon o a cualquier otro servicio compatible, podemos construir comunidades auténticas y respetuosas con la privacidad. Así como también utilizar herramientas de mensajería como #XMPP o #DeltaChat por nombrar un par.

La promoción del software libre es una responsabilidad compartida. Al elegir conscientemente las herramientas que utilizamos y al educar a nuestra comunidad, podemos construir un ecosistema digital más justo y equitativo. ¡No se trata solo de utilizar software libre, sino de vivirlo!

The #FreeSoftware community managed to keep #IRC relevant for decades with the same strategy - it was the only medium to chat with them. There's no reason the same can't be done for #XMPP, a vastly superior protocol.

Oh, I should mention that XMPP supports anonymous authentication, so people can chat without making an account, just like IRC. And you can use Movim, Converse.js, or xmpp-web to provide a web client. Onboarding new users is trivial.

The #FreeSoftware, #FreeData, #FreeCulture, and other communities can make a big difference by moving their communities to #XMPP - whether they are longstanding ones, or new ones.

Yes, there will be pushback. Pushback is the bread and butter of progress. You need to have the strength to keep moving forward no natter what.

Ideally, you will also debridge from proprietary/centralized networks. Or set a timeline for doing so.

I've tried it. It works. More people need to do it.

#XMPP has continued to evolve and improve over the many years I've been using it. But despite the development effort going into it, there aren't as many people joining it as there should.

We can thank hype and neomania for that. These factors ensure that proprietary/centralized networks (the latter includes #Matrix) receive more funding and more code contributors. More funding results in better marketing and stronger network effect.
