So let me understand this. If someone is broadcasting from "Threads" and uses a hashtag I follow, I'm going to see it here. Meanwhile any interaction I have will be a shout into the ether? or a re-post of someone who has decided not to be on Mastodon?
I also cannot follow or be followed by people on Threads yet? Feeling annoyed with Instagram trying to shove this down my throat and then seeing a bit here too. Help a non-tech kid understand.
this is why many people who're so adamantly against federating with threads are so goddamn ANGRY
we're so fucking tired tired of having our safe spaces -- our refuges against queerphobia -- ripped away from us
queer people, outcasts, weirdos, etc. -- we built this fucking network. we laid the groundwork for its very existence and now you're trying to tell us we don't matter, that we should just give it all up in the face of some evil megacorp. well fuck that
we're not going down without a fight
you have NO IDEA how full of queer neurodivergent leftist furries this place was before y'all showed up. no goddamn clue. that was this place's shtick for the longest time
this is the sort of virulent transphobia that is allowed to exist on Threads. stuff like this actually literally gets people killed. why should we federate with a platform that willingly tolerates such hate speech?
I’m seeing a lot of pictures from #Threads accounts posted with autogenerated #AltText that is literally worse than nothing. The text will read something like, “Photo by [username] on [date]. May be a meme with one person and text.” (I say this is worse than nothing because (a) “May be a meme” is just hilariously bad and (b) it constantly credits photos to people who clearly didn’t take them.) Is this something that Threads just … does?
My guess is #meta is thinking that being the Gmail of the #SocialWeb is better than having Elon and #Twitter dominate the public conversation. They'd rather be a big player but not own the space, than have an asshole increasingly lock them out. Their efforts to federate #threads (and thus grow the fedi) need not be motivated by any notion of the greater good.
However, user privacy is a big deal, & if #Meta made #ActivityPub the default setting, they could end up with a privacy lawsuit from users who found their info on an evil instance or billion dollar fines from @EUCommission (who penalize based on global revenue).
Making #Fediverse opt-in saves Meta from spending more money on lawyers later on.
Meta finally got me. Signed up for threads. Is there an easy way to just make it mirror my masto feed maybe with my account info and a note to follow me here?
Threads' @pcottle confirmed at #FediForum that it is still working towards allowing #Threads users to follow e.g. Mastodon users. This is a must-have for me (and I'm sure many of you), as I really want to use Mastodon as my primary social media app.
Since almost one year now, a bug in #Mastodon is hiding many visits to @heiseonline originating from here. In addition, #Bluesky and #Threads are almost as long usable here, as additional alternatives to #Twitter.
