When Goggle.com started replaced its search engine with a Trained #MOLE, it started a transition from being a web search engine, to becoming a *guessing* engine. By replacing the list of webpage links - the output of a web search engine - with a chatbot interface that outputs word salad, Goggle are just completing a process they started years ago.
"AI Overviews are now used by more than 2.5 billion monthly users; meanwhile, its conversational #search mode, launched last year, now tops 1 billion monthly users."
Astounding numbers.
"Combined, these changes will likely further decimate Google referrals to publishers, which have already been suffering from declining referrals due to AI Overviews. This has put some ad-dependent media operations out of business, and now things will likely get worse."
• Wikipedia still organises information like a printed (!) tome, w/ lemma, article text, sources.
• #AI provides texts according to prompts, sources become irrelevant to display but are still available.
• AI search results demand cash to display sources and their URLs.
This seems probable because its people who need URLs and hyperlinks in their browsers, not machines that can locate and combine their assets in databases by other means (ISBN, UUIDs, DOIs, magnet links).
That is: Why still maintain an overhead for the purpose of convenient browser display when the search engines can directly access sources and only need to dsplay an individually created text to its individual prompt? And that means:
• The next step in web based display of information is the complete disappearance of URL and hyperlink.
Let me elaborate: In their overall form (and quality), information and text will become indistinguishable from audio and video streams, fluid instead of persistent, with features like "sourcing", momentary capture, and storage the next commodity ("product") for search engine companies to sell.
This all the more as ads will no longer be a viable business model for the internet industries. Like health data that are among the most precious data because of their long-lasting and immutable quality, so are the hard (meta-) data of sources which make them assets most valuable to monetize.
In short: In order for tech companies to monetize on the format data of sources, the URLs and hyperlinks of their corresponding webpages will vanish. For individual users to verify the credibility of information they receive, they will have to pay a fee. Or put differently: Not access but accuracy and verifiablity will be the next walled garden.
Period of time until full implemenation: Only five years, as every new search query will prompt AI to access sources whose addresses it then can hide from the browser display. That can be at least a linear dynamic.
ChatGPT was never Google’s biggest threat; it was always its own hubris.
With Search now being sacrificed on the altar of AI dominance, the time has come for users to get serious about moving off Google services. It’s not only destroying its products; it’s trying to further degrade the web itself.
This is why I like #Duckduckgo You can block the detritus from your searches. Sometimes I do want to know what the far right are saying, and I can search for that with Google, but the rest of the time I don't have to wade through the garbage. All search engines should do this. @ecosia#AUSpol#Search
"In addition to excluding neocities.org from search results, when we discovered the block, Bing was also placing what appeared to be a phishing attack against Neocities on the first page of search results."
What’s everyone’s preferred search engine? I’ve been using Bing for years (I know, I know) but the AI crap being constantly forced in my face makes me want to abandon it altogether.
Are there any good alternatives that don’t use AI while also producing reliable results?
