@ThePfromtheO@social.vivaldi.net @Vivaldi@social.vivaldi.net I thought Vivaldi did not publish the full source code of the application including the UI, but only published the changes it made to Chromium? Did this recently change?

@ThePfromtheO@social.vivaldi.net @Vivaldi@social.vivaldi.net Both Wikipedia and Vivaldi's own website explicitly mention that about 5% of the source code is missing.

Vivaldi has even posted essentially the same blogpost about it multiple times. It contains various invalid and cope excuses for why that is the case.

      https://vivaldi.com/blog/vivaldi-browser-open-source/
      https://vivaldi.com/blog/technology/why-isnt-vivaldi-browser-open-source/

If you actually care about your users, you should give them the full source code with a free software license, no exceptions.

@ThePfromtheO@social.vivaldi.net @Vivaldi@social.vivaldi.net And this is exactly the reason why Vivaldi can not be included in the repositories for popular distros like Debian.

While Chromium and Firefox are available on most distros, because they do comply with this.

It's a bad look and Vivaldi should consider releasing the full source.

      @ThePfromtheO@social.vivaldi.net @Vivaldi@social.vivaldi.net Yes, and that's exactly why I posted what I did.

Vivaldi is not a company that cares about its users, privacy or freedom. They are not fighting for a better web, all they are doing is making the web more locked down and taking more control away from the user. All of this that is being claimed on your website and it is just marketing and not reality.

I really hope they change this policy and publish the full source code at some point. Because if they do Vivaldi can actually start hanging out with the big boys like Firefox or Chromium.

I really want to drive home the point that you currently have more restrictions than the bigger players in your field, that actively blocking distribution maintainers from properly implementing your software. That is really bad.

Trust me when I say that there is currently an entire world of free and "open source" people like me out there who are probably willing to switch to Vivaldi but are unable to, just because of they are being extremely greedy with a very small, but important part of the codebase.

Something like this can be changed very easily too. All you have to do is add a license file to the repo and click on "publish".

      So why not do it?

“I really hope they change this policy and publish the full source code at some point. Because if they do Vivaldi can actually start hanging out with the big boys like Firefox or Chromium.”

#Vivaldi's answer on this: “But, the way we see it, Vivaldi is more than just its code. It is our brand, with associated trademarks we have to protect. This means any fork needs to be branded as a different product.

And this new product then would become an immediate competitor without putting any significant technical work to reach that status.”
      https://vivaldi.com/blog/technology/why-isnt-vivaldi-browser-open-source/#:~:text=But%2C%20the%20way,reach%20that%20status.

“a very small, but important part of the codebase.”
That's the whole point of it

And yes, this can be done very easily, but, as they said, there's no coming-back. They don't only have to think about the ease of doing something, but also about it's (long-term) consequences.

And this new product then would become an immediate competitorA fork that uses the same codebase is not really a competitor. You can share code between forks, so it also benefits Vivaldi to have forks available.

And if you maintain your software well and do what your users want, there would be no need for anyone to make a fork in the first place.

These are not not valid reasons.

#VivaldiBrowser's most important thing is the #UI. #OpenSourcing it all would still mean letting others take it, no matter of how it is with others.
After all, #VivaldiTechnologies is a company that relies mainly on this. Some people complain about #DirectMatch and #sponsored #searchEngines, even though they are removable. If they would #openSource it, soon there would appear a “#debloated #Vivaldi” version #forked by some people. How would Vivaldi make #money then, I ask you?

im no expert on licensing, and i wouldn't know if/what anything is omitted. But I did download it and have been looking around.
alot of the source files lack copyright notices. alot of the ones that do are just the simple "all rights reserved". very little contain license headers
/thirdparty/ChromaSDK appears to have 43.7kiB of .h files without a license or copyright notice. maybe it takes the license from /LICENSE but being in a folder called 'thirdparty' makes me unsure. also does [attached screenshots] look odd to you? again no lawyer but it looks quite similar to my eyes, though maybe its not substantial enough to retain the original copyright notice?

@ThePfromtheO@social.vivaldi.net @SuperDicq@minidisc.tokyo @Vivaldi@social.vivaldi.net [Vivaldi]'s important thing is the UI.Is it, though? Generally a browser's most important thing is their engine. Which ties in neatly with your...[Open sourcing] it all would still mean letting others take it, no matter of how it is with others. So just like what Vivaldi did with the engine they're using? It's somehow fine for them to take the work of others, but this doesn't go both ways? Does this not sound a bit weird to you?soon there would appear a “debloated Vivaldi” version forked by some peopleSimilar to how Firefox has it, then, who are also a profit seeking company and were doing this very well for a long time, until they started to sell out their user base for short term C-level bonuses. But even with Mozilla actively trying to make Firefox the worst it can be, the debloated forks are nowhere near as popular as the main thing, so your whole argument falls flat in reality. How would Vivaldi make money then, I ask you?The forks don't "take money away", people who use it were unlikely to use the shitty main release anyway. And like I stated in the previous paragraph, forks are unlikely to become more popular than the main thing to begin with. They'd have to really fuck shit up to make a fork suddenly take all their marketshare, and at that point its just the market working as intended.

Also hot damn that hashtag spam is a mental disorder.

@ThePfromtheO@social.vivaldi.net @tyil@fedi.tyil.nl @Vivaldi@social.vivaldi.net Vivaldi is holding itself back.

Trust me when I say that if you want Vivaldi to become more popular you need to release the source code.

Vivaldi is actually hurting itself by doing something it believes is good for them. I really think so.

      @tyil @SuperDicq @Vivaldi

“Generally a browser's most important thing is their engine.”

Think more, and you'll realise that #Vivaldi is an #exception. It's only #sellingPoint, as I said, is the #UI. There are many other #privacyFocused #browsers, #VivaldiBrowser's #powerfull #features are what keep it #afloat TBH.

"It's somehow fine for them to take the work of others, but this doesn't go both ways? Does this not sound a bit weird to you?"

If they make their work #available to be accessed by anyone, they'll die in the end. #VivaldiTechnologies is a much smaller company compared to #Google and #Mozilla.

"But even with Mozilla actively trying to make Firefox the worst it can be, the debloated forks are nowhere near as popular as the main thing, so your whole argument falls flat in reality."

No, it doesn't, because #FF was released much earlier than V. This means it had much more time to become #popular enough to keep it's #userbase, while Vivaldi wouldn't.

"forks are unlikely to become more popular than the main thing to begin with. They'd have to really fuck shit up to make a fork suddenly take all their marketshare, and at that point its just the market working as intended."

Yes, for more popular browsers. But for new ones, this is not true.

@ThePfromtheO@social.vivaldi.net @SuperDicq@minidisc.tokyo @Vivaldi@social.vivaldi.net There are many other [privacy focused] browsers,"Many other" implies that Vivaldi is privacy focused, but seeing as how they don't release their source code we can only hope it is part of that group. If they make their work available to be accessed by anyone, they'll die in the end.Not if they have a great product. The fact other free software projects are older means nothing, new free software projects are started today as well, and they become popular as well. They become popular because they're better than the alternative.

If you're saying Vivaldi is just not good enough software to survive on their own merits, I would generally agree at this point in time. No, it doesn't, because [Firefox] was released much earlier than [Vivaldi]. This means it had much more time to become popular enoughToday, Vivaldi's market share is 0.002% according to Cloudflare's global market share report of 2025Q2. Vivaldi is ten years old by now. When Firefox was 10 years old, it had 16% market share according to statcounter. Saying "Firefox had more time" is a sad cope. What Firefox had was a full free software browser that actually respected the user.
