Looking for some #tech advice. Trying to move from #Gmail to more secure #email accounts. Set up free @protonprivacy account and was planning on doing one more. Planned on using #Mailfence but they won't let me register. I was thinking of going with @startmail or @fastmail as a general secure inbox. Any thoughts or experiences with them? A third option is to do Mail Plus with #Proton and have just one box. Wanted to keep costs lower ($5 or below). Doing this as part @cyberlyra's Cyber Cleanse!
Damned #Google is now pushing their invasive AI crap Gemini onto the Desktop version of #Gmail, with no apparent way for individual users to disable it (Admins for commercial users apparently do have a toggle). The Gemini sucker icon appears as a four-pointed "sprite" next to the settings gear. If you hover on it, you'll see a "Try Gemini" tooltip. DO NOT CLICK ON IT, unless you want Google's horrific lying, fascism-ridden misinformation machine sucking up your emails.
NOTE: Again, there is no apparent way for individual user to disable this. The sprite appears even if you have all Gmail "Smart" features disabled.
This is Google blatantly trying to force this garbage on users who have no idea what it is and how much damage it can do to them, presumably as a first step toward pushing their "AI Agents" to take control of your browsing. Of course, if this is your kink, go ahead and chain yourself to Gemini. But you've been warned.
Looking to stop using #Gmail as my primary email service.
Has anyone used #Tuta (was #Tutanota)? It seems like they offer a good service. Any issues with it I should be aware of?
Obviously, changing email providers is no small task, so I want do as much as I can to make sure I'm picking the right service. Also plan on using a custom domain so I guess that'll make a switch in the future much easier.
@BeAware Just.... trying to figure out what I need that #tilde can't really replicate on a wider scale.
Next on the list is something that isn't #gmail I've heard Protonmail is good, but... any other good options? Even something with far less innate storage would work as a personal mailbox.
Fun fact: Because I have images turned off by default in #Gmail and read the rest (more than half) of my email using a non-HTML MUA fed from my own SMTP servers, the senders of the vast majority of email I receive cannot know whether I've ever opened their emails or not. I think this is grand.
If I were a tech or software dev hiring manager, I would automatically reject all applications coming from free email services like gmail, protonmail, tutanota, outlook, etc. A nerd or hacker should already have their own domain name and email server, or institutional email account.
Also, using a free email service for any personal business is a HUGE data security risk, not just for the applicant, but for the company responding to the applicant. State agencies can snarf such communications to glean inside business information, then sell that information to your competitors, which is probably happening somewhere right now as I write this.
DNS are quite fundamental to the Internet, @_elena@mastodon.social so unfortunately a proper configuration is a sort of rite of passage, just like learning that it might take a couple of days for any update to propagate, so getting them right in the first place is just as wise as tricky.
Fortunately you are not going to face the burden #Google's #GMail imposed to all of us by self-hosting your email server, that is way worse than a website or a fediverse node! Consider self-hosting your email server like the last level big-boss in your favourite adventure game.
It also discuss some of the vulnerabilities of the #fediverse that you might not be aware yet (but that can all be mitigated by #selfhosting your instances, so you are on the good track anyway 😉 )
For clarification, I was asking about setting #GMail up so that if I sent e-mails from one account to the GMail account, they'd be forwarded with the GMail account as the From and Reply-to fields.
Is anyone here a #gmail expert? Years ago I set up a client’s email with gmail as the UI for an account on a hosted domain. Now we have changed both the registrar and the host, and I cannot find a way to access the pop/imap setup for the account. Gmail has instructions for sending gmail to another client like outlook, but not for changing the setup on an email account coming in to gmail. #HiveMind
"Selectric is a free #MacOS app and currently supports #Gmail, Outlook, Drive, Dropbox and #Slack. The app is completely private. We index and store all data on your Mac."
My son just got a new phone and #Gmail account. Everything setup just fine. A couple of days later, #Google locked him out ("we've detected unusual activity") and wants a new phone number. None of the ones I'm trying are accepted, even ones tied to other Google accounts (mine, my wife's, etc). What the heck?!
I remember the days when people were furious Google was scanning their emails to serve ads. Now we’ve reached the point that everything you send and receive is being filtered through its AI model and you’re expected to love it.
I remember signing up for #Gmail all those years ago with glee. Back then, #Microsoft email via #hotmail was a hot mess, while #Yahoo email was slightly better—but only in the sense that 💩 is better than 💩 🔛 🔥!!
I am grateful that #Google launched Gmail as it did radically change my life for the better (privacy issues aside).
Just got registered with a local GP in Ireland¹ and their first email states that all their staff are “formally trained in GDPR procedures and any information you give will be used in the strictest confidence.”
Their email address is @gmail.com
🤦♂️
¹ This, in and of itself, is a bloody miracle these days, apparently, and only happened because it’s a new practice that’s just opening up.
