I've trialed #Kagi for its first 100 searches. Now that it asks me to move to a paid plan, I'm wondering: is it really worth the €10 a month or should I just stick with #DuckDuckGo? Its feature set is essentially the same as far as I can see and DDG runs an ethical business model with a strong emphasis on privacy as well.
Holy shit, #DuckDuckGo has started showing (bad!) AI summaries for search results instead of excerpts from the page. #DDG results have been going downhill for a while, but this is just unusable.
(This is inherited from Bing. DDG once had its own search results, but has just been Bing for a while now.)
What are y'all using for search engines these days?
Click the thumbs down on the question "Was this helpful?" under the generated short and Select "Dislike AI". Maybe if enough do they will at least not turn it on by default!? I doubt it, but...
I'm searching for how much water will a tomato plant need during its lifetime.
In the article, this is the section on "water usage":
"As your tomato plant grows, it will drink up the water from the Kratky reservoir, causing the water level to drop. You'll need to keep an eye on this and top up the reservoir as needed if the plant isn't ready to harvest yet."
THAT'S WRONG!!!!
THAT WILL _KILL_ YOUR PLANT!!!
The whole point of Kratky Hydroponics is you give the plant as much water as it needs during its entire lifecycle. If you REFILL the reservoir as directed above, you will smother its air roots and DROWN the plant!
Not only is the AI wrong. It gives you advice that will destroy your project. It's giving the OPPOSITE of right.... not sure not accurate, but completely abjectly wrong.
Turned off #DuckDuckGo's AI features in the settings menu & thought that would persist after closing #Firefox, but 'twas not the case. Seem to have solved the problem by turning off DDG's AI features & using URL shown in "Show Bookmarklet and Settings Data" as homepage in FF settings & then allowing DDG cookies under FF's "Manage Exceptions" for Cookies. Cycled FF a couple of times & AI features indicator disappeared, so fingers crossed.😓
My survey asked what your favorite search engine is.
51% said DuckDuckGo, 12% Startpage, 9% Ecosia and 4% Qwant. Only 6% said Google and 1% Bing. 17% said they preferred another search engine, with many mentioning Kagi and Mojeek.
This is quite different from what the market share out there is, which shows how unique you all are here in the Fediverse. You make your own choices and do not follow everyone else. Be proud.
@stefano@justine TIL the alleged paragon of privacy, #duckduckgo, not only redirects visitors off their onion site when u visit it (at least it does with js disabled, which is the safest way to use #torbrowser), but ddg also have a separate domain (external-content.duckduckgo.com) for serving the little icons alongside each search result, and that is put through THE CLEARNET!! This means that if an entity happened to provide the guard and exit node then they can possibly track the user even if they are using tor browser!
oh and #ddg is served from #microsoft servers (m$ has military contracts so make of that what u will)
who wants succulent roasted duck? because im in my right mind to rake some burning hot coals over this duck, does it deserve to be lauded as highly as it has been. I say NO. Dear @torproject can u c this? do we need to do a call to action to help other search engines take pride of place in tor browser?
Finally I have tracked down my #Qutebrowser issue that only seemed to mess with #DuckDuckGo search results returning an 400 Bad Request It seems in my config.py I had the following user agent line.
