I've never used a toothpaste that is peppermint-only (though I suppose there are probably some like that?), usually it's spearmint (or some mix of mints). Certainly with everything else in toothpaste, it tastes nothing like peppermint candy/ ice cream - that's like comparing oregano (a mint!) in sauce to oregano in candy - just because you like (or dislike) it one way doesn't mean you're going to like (or dislike) the other completely different thing that has a similar ingredient.
