    Brad @delong asked:

"We need to have an accurate theory of what caused the Fall of the Blogosphere in the first place. Why did the audience—and, yes, the creators too—succumb to the Siren song, and wind up doomscrolling through clickbait so that their glued-to-the-screen eyeballs could be sold to advertisers convincing them that the worse is actually the better product as they sell their fake diabetes cures and crypto grifts?"

@delong @bmann @mjgardner @bobwyman @davew and we aren’t “users” any more. We are the web.

@bmann @delong @ricmac @bobwyman No eulogy for the first wave of #blogging and #RSS is complete without laying blame on #Google for turning #GoogleReader into the leading feed reader (so much so that even RSS innovator @davew had to contort his feed under duress to remain compatible), and then unceremoniously killing it, scattering its users to the embrace of siloed #SocialMedia.

@delong @ricmac @bobwyman and generally — there are fewer people who have the ability, time, or inclination to write long form.

Once the easy money of early search advertising went out, it became commoditized SEO bait.

Mobile form factors being the majority of people’s computing device contributes to this. It’s “easier” to post quick and short.

@bobwyman @delong one part of it was that people slowly stopped using comments on blogs — you may recall that blog comments became ridden with spam, even before social media took off. Also, trackbacks were always unreliable. Then services like Technorati failed. RSS services couldn't keep up (despite Feedburner et al). Twitter, FB et al were easier for "normies" to use. And then there was the ego part of it — folks began to get more of an ego boost on social media, so they migrated there.
