When I first watched Dexter I thought it was unrealistic that he had so much plastic wrap and then I came to America. To a business Costco, specifically

I was just telling someone how it’s taking me years to finish my 1000 sq ft roll of aluminum foil from Costco

@mem yeah it’s ridiculous. Cooking oil is very very cheap if you can buy a lot of it, compared to supermarket prices (same price for a fraction of the amount)

@skinnylatte uh. I looked up the price. $20 for 3000 ft.

At my local supermarket I pay $5 for 100 ft. I would pay $150 for 3000 ft!!! That's 7.5 times more expensive!!!

@skinnylatte That cheese feels really expensive.

      $1099 = ~$1,500 🇨🇦
      80 lbs =36.3 kg
      ~$41/KG🇨🇦 / $13.75/LBS USD.

I paid >$5 for 400 grams today, about $12.5(🇨🇦)/ KG or ~$4.25/LBS USD.

Never realized it was so much more expensive there.

      400 5
      1000 x

@alien the reasonable explanation is that it’s split into many portions, but it is not.

Things where I am are consistently 3x larger a portion size than where I come from; and people from elsewhere in the U.S. consider SF portion sizes to be tiny.

@skinnylatte When I (Spaniard) went to the US to visit family as a teenager, I remember being very confused at sizes. I remember the first time I went to the grocery store, I saw a sale of a really huge bucket of chicken nuggets + a gallon of sweet tea and I was trying to figure out why.

Fortunately my family there is Colombian+Venezuelan and therefore they cook reasonable meals but ?? Confusing af

@econads @alien people have a different approach to eating out. When they go out they expect to have enough to take home for another meal. I don’t know why that’s just part of the culture. People get very upset if the portion is ‘so small’ that they can’t do that. I’ve not really experienced this elsewhere

@skinnylatte @alien so does all the food get eaten or is it just massively wasteful?
