     @dsm @pwm The deck is just a deck, I'll go with 1"x6" tongue and groove pine with rigid insulation underneath between joists. I'm going to put it on a bit of a slope with a couple feet clearance under the low side, so that I can fit a grey water & a centrex waste composting system, and have a functional sink & toilet without worrying about contaminating groundwater or digging a septic field.

     @pwm @dsm Just a placeholder, I'm still working out that area. I'll probably move the bulk of the countertops out where I have that line drawn, move the fridge closer to the sink, and move the sink over right a bit. That or move the stove down. I'd also like a gas range so that cooking in summer isn't so hot, but still trying designs.

Like, it's one thing if your parents are trans and abused you into tweaking dotfiles for years on end.      @mischievoustomato Well, be prepared to buy "all in" on Apple then if you don't want to rip your fucking teeth out with frustration. They honestly make it purposefully difficult on the user if the user isn't using an iPhone, or an iPad, or AirPods, etc.. And, even then, the experience is hugely restrictive because Apple doesn't want you to be able to just use their hardware however you deem fit and they want you to buy into other profit intakes like AppleTV+ and shit. @parker

     @mischievoustomato I'm sure running a media server and streaming from it would work fine. But, for example, Apple makes it needlessly, painfully difficult to use iPhones or iPads as storage devices or to conduct file transfer to/from them. I suspect because they don't want people pirating media and transferring it to an iPad or whatever for later viewing. If it's streaming off a media server somewhere you can probably just connect to it via an app or browser I guess. @parker

I had assorted issues when I was using iPhone and my company-issued-iPad is nothing but trouble. I swear that fucking demon slate exists solely to frustrate me and make my life difficult. @parker

     @mischievoustomato I bought a cheap Xiaomi in China when I first moved over there in 2015. It was kinda trash. I'd have to keep prying off the back and removing the battery (it had a swappable/replaceable battery) because it would lock up and you'd be unable to get it to turn off or reboot otherwise. I think they're pretty "okay" nowadays, I see their stores all the time in shopping centers and stuff. I'd probably get a Huawei or Vivo over them though if I had to buy one of the domestic offerings. @parker @pettanko

     @mischievoustomato I'd totally buy a high-end Samsung in {{ .Date }}. They've gotten so much better than they used to be, although the idea still leaves a poor taste in my mouth from remembering how bad they once were in the mobile arena. If your pickings are slim, though, I understand the sentiment to get an iPhone: you know it will do the thing it says it will do. For example, I ended up buying an iPhone 5S in China after my run-in with Xiaomi and it reliably worked for me over there. @parker @pettanko

     @mischievoustomato I have a Google Pixel with the stock Google version of Android that came pre-installed and it's fucking phenomenal in my personal experience. Also, it works on our shitty in-flight WiFi super well whereas my co-workers with iPhones can't connect to shit + my company iPad can't connect to shit because Apple cheaps out on their network cards or antennas or whatever. Idk why but Apple shit just doesn't cut it while I'll be streaming music and browsing Fedi just fine on my Pixel. Everyone else with an iPhone is like "the WiFi isn't working"---nah, fam, the WiFi is working just fine. Your phone just sucks. @parker @pettanko

     @parker I also think people who spend all their free time fucking around with custom TWM configs and prone-to-breaking-bleeding-edge-release-Linux-distros are dumb and need better hobbies. But, at least with a "2nd generation Thinkpad product" the choices of hardware and software are almost endless. Self-harm like that becomes a voluntary choice vs. a requirement to use the device itself.

If you need a PC that can run proprietary industry standards needed for work the Macs are arguably the best around now that they offer serious advantages and differences from x86. I can only hope ARM grows bigger so a fire gets lit under the x86 duopoly's arses.
