   I don't understand these people who button their shirts / jackets from the top to the bottom.
   
   The phrase is literally "button up". I don't think there is an English speaking place on the planet where mothers are telling their children to "button down" their coats to stay warm

     To make things worse, my wife informed me that she always buttons from the top down and is very annoyed that zippers do not start at the top as well

     @tk @feld incidentally there are other uses for button down but I don't know the significance. if you are conservative you're buttoned down, or you can button down a tarp etc

     @jonah here's a thought: when I was a kid I definitely was required to button up my own coat before ever being exposed to a shirt with buttons. So the fact that I was first taught to do it with a coat probably reinforced how I've always done it with a shirt.

     @sun if you have a shorter coat going from the bottom is probably easy enough, but if the coat is very long it's harder to get the bottom ones started correctly

     @jonah @feld one cannot be completely sure where the first button is on the bottom, especially back when spare buttons existed.
