We have breakfast oatmeal and cereal at our hotel, and my parents have completely ignored it and placed a bag of rice and various noodles next to them.

For me too, I.. cannot eat oatmeal or cereal for breakfast.

I guess my response to having oatmeal or cereals for breakfast is the same as people who have those things can’t imagining having rice or noodles for breakfast.

It just doesn’t feel or taste right. I don’t feel set for my day. I feel grumpy that I didn’t have rice and noodles and savory flavors for breakfast. Sweet food is for after 12pm

@jensilber I like it better when I cook it like a congee! With broth and eggs :)

@heartofcoyote you just cook rice (this is why people have a good rice cooker so they can keep the dinner rice for breakfast overnight in it and it’ll still be fresh)

      And make the sides

      https://www.justonecookbook.com/traditional-japanese-breakfast-at-home/

We have dozens of rice types for breakfast with different sides. Curry rice, coconut rice, rice rolls, rice cakes.. breakfast fried rice

@skinnylatte How do you have the rice? I had a “Japanese breakfast” in a mall in Honolulu ages ago & loved it soooo much. There was an egg on top and some miso and seaweed and some kind of dried spices mix. So so so good, but I’ve no clue how to make it myself.

Cold cereal is for dinner, IMO, but I like oatmeal, polenta, or even cream of wheat occasionally. Mostly I skip breakfast, but I’m a breakfast all day kind of person. 😂

@halla those things are good when the ingredients are good. I would not do a Nordic cold breakfast in most of America haha

I like all breakfast but it has to be savory. Even diner breakfasts are fine if it’s like ham and eggs. No pancakes. No waffles. Nothing sweet.

Croissants and bread I only do if the bakery and the butter is exceptionally good and high quality.

@skinnylatte I might be weird, but my favorite breakfast is pickled herring, smoked mackerel, hot fish cakes and pickles with toasted rye bread and maybe an egg. And I'm not even Scandinavian.

But I sure enjoyed my hotel stays in Finland when I still was a Nokia contractor.

Oh, wait. my favorite breakfast is also idli with sambar or dosas.

It's also bacon pancakes with molasses, the think kind, not the fluffy kind.

Ah, croissants with butter and cheese are fine too.

Breakfast food is just such a wild concept. Where I come from, it’s eat anything at any time, all day, everyday.

@Jackiemauro a lot of southern Chinese food is no sweets ever, so sweets at any time is kind of hard. I’ve grown to like a pastry but only if it is exceptionally good. I would do an Arsicault pastry but not a Tartine, also feels like American style pastries are just too much and too sweet and large.

@skinnylatte it’s funny that there aren’t breakfast foods, but there are definite not-breakfast foods (sweets).

I have to admit I love a day that starts with a great pastry. Especially since admittedly most of my days just start with coffee.

@skinnylatte haha well so much of American food is just objectively too big and too sweet. But I can’t say no to a great pain au raisins or almond croissant.

How do savory western breakfasts go over? Bacon and eggs, hash browns and the like?

It’s too much food for me in the morning, but I feel like noodles would be too.

@Jackiemauro ham and eggs and stuff like that is fine. But yeah US portions are way too large.

A bowl of noodles I get for breakfast in sf is literally 3x bigger than one in Singapore / Malaysia / Thailand. I end up not wanting it coz it is too much and I don’t want to eat leftovers.

In Singapore I might have two different noodles for breakfast so I can have a variety.

@skinnylatte im going to have to experience this. My poor American brain is so confused at the idea of noodles for breakfast 😂

Maybe it’s also my Italian heritage that just cannot accept this reversal of noodle times.

@skinnylatte I know so many people who firmly believe eggs are only for the morning (with the exception of egg salad, I guess?) and I don’t understand how they survive.

@skinnylatte There is one sticking rule for morning, no meat. Doesn't matter what it is as long you brush your teeth quick. Long bathroom times is annoying.
