@skinnylatte im going to have to experience this. My poor American brain is so confused at the idea of noodles for breakfast 😂
Maybe it’s also my Italian heritage that just cannot accept this reversal of noodle times.

@skinnylatte haha well so much of American food is just objectively too big and too sweet. But I can’t say no to a great pain au raisins or almond croissant.
How do savory western breakfasts go over? Bacon and eggs, hash browns and the like?
It’s too much food for me in the morning, but I feel like noodles would be too.
@skinnylatte it’s funny that there aren’t breakfast foods, but there are definite not-breakfast foods (sweets).
I have to admit I love a day that starts with a great pastry. Especially since admittedly most of my days just start with coffee.
@skinnylatte there’s a particular pain to it too having grown up here before the tech boom when we DID have good food. Ugh.

Absolutely devastating last sentence in an article about San Francisco’s head of a Republican org and asshole impersonating ICE in a taqueria to scare people.

@skinnylatte are you gonna take them whale watching?!
@mekkaokereke I always imagine these guys coming up to strangers in a bar just having a conversation and yelling some of their nonsense at them.
Of course the people would be totally free to leave the bar, but they probably wouldn’t have to. Some big dude being paid to remove problems would come and remove the problem. Bodily, if need be.
But maybe these guys have never really gone out in the world to know that.
@mekkaokereke In that case I am in FULLLLL agreement. Some of the spaces I’ve felt *most* comfortable in have been around really serious athletes (esp boxers). But I do love me a warhammer nerd now and then :P
Some of my least comfortable moments were definitely thanks to the nerds when they started being the main presence in the bars I used to go to in SF. UGH.
I guess, by “jock” do we mean guys who are naturally athletic and like sports? Or guys whose dads told them they weren’t real men so they started lifting weights and performing hypermasculinity to finally please the hateful men in their lives?
@mekkaokereke i mean, a lot of this obviously depends on where you draw the lines around “Jock” vs. “Nerd”. If I had to sort republican congressmen, for example, they would generally fall into “jock” category. If we’re talking serious athletes vs someone working in tech, that’s a different sort of categorization I think.
@mekkaokereke HM!! Such an interesting statement. In my totally unscientific and spur of the moment opinion, I think this mostly holds, but in a specific sense.
I think relatively few nerds genuinely *like* women, while a good share of jocks do. But the jocks who hate women do so in perhaps a more actively dangerous way, where they really seek to own and control us.

I honestly sometimes feel like this is the strongest argument I have against car centered cities.
Why are your kids in your house, in your hair, screaming and making a mess? Cause if you send them outside on the street they’ll get run over. How great would it be if that were not the case?
@mxp I HATE conventions of academic writing that do not make your meaning any clearer. As if reading academic writing weren’t hard enough. It always just felt like gate keeping to me.
@lzg sometimes the zeal tips right on into zealotry
@lzg have you ever heard the story of how they dyed the first gay flag? It was enormous and they didn’t even have hot water so they were lugging pots of hot water up a ladder to the roof and just stirring and stirring endlessly.
@xgranade I sort of wonder how much of it is just as you’re going about your life you see gas prices going up and down prominently all over and all the time.
There are no giant signs with the cost of a mammogram or apartment all around. Maybe it’s just this really present reminder that stands in for like the state of things.

My favorite vinaigrette is just lemon, olive oil, garlic, salt and pepper. I have no idea the proportions. I just add until I feel happy.
I actually really love salads. I think you have to make them with the goal of making something tasty, rather than the goal of making something virtuous that you choke down to seem good tough. Its nice to have a light, cold side in a meal.
@alienghic @craignicol @mekkaokereke @PJ_Evans @risottobias
I actually think the problem is that we’ve structured society to make parenting basically torture. People used to be able to rely on a network of caregivers to help. The idea of the nuclear family exploded all that. There’s no amount of money that can replace a deep social network when it comes to child care.
No way to have a birth rate crisis and an immigration crisis at the same time
(Unless you’re racist)
Anyone have Recs for where to order some pie / cake / dessert for thanksgiving in #SanFrancisco ? My usual go to already closed their orders.
@skinnylatte im looking at you 🫣
