     idk i think companies want to make faster webapps so that ppl dont have software on their machine anymore and dont own it and thus cant pirate it

     From what I understand, WASM is not really a browser thing anymore. It's a full on runtime like LLVM? I dunno, I haven't really looked at it in ages. My Nephew goes on about it though. Apparently, Figma is written entirely in WASM.

     You could say Android is just Linux ... but it's vastly different than any Linux desktop distro. It's got it's own display system (no X or Wayland), it doesn't have virtual consoles, the entire underlying filesystem layer, bootloaders and system drivers are entirely different. It still uses SELinux and FUSE, but in vastly different ways than a desktop OS.
     
     I've never touched ChromeOS, but I imagine it's equally different. It seems like FushiaOS died off?

     If you install just Linux on a desktop, you will get a nonfunctional computer.
     
     You'll need to install either GNU/Linux, systemd/Linux or BusyBox/Linux if you want a computer that boots.

     It has virtual consoles, you're just not allowed to access them by default.

     @fiore @lizzie @djsumdog @nyanide What are these "Linux desktops" and "Linux packages" you write of? You mean GNU desktops and GNU packages?
     
     I don't believe chromeos comes with a package manager you're allowed to control, although it's possible to install a package manager once you get into developer mode and have access to GNU bash.

     @djsumdog @lizzie @nyanide i think the chrome os stack is very very similar to a norrmal linux desktop , as much so htat you can actually install linux packages if u enable some settings (its gentoo based )

     @kerosene @fiore @lizzie @djsumdog WASM is even worse than JavaScript - thankfully it is assumed to not be supported, thus few people are subjected to it.
     
     Imagine proprietary software running on your computer, with ublock origin being unable to decline even the loading of advertisements.

     @djsumdog @fiore @lizzie WASM apparently isn't a browser thing because webdevs REFUSE to accept that JS is a bottom of the barrel compilation target and don't give WASM access to all the browser APIs it needs so people can dunk JS in the trash.

     You can install a Debian container onto Android just as well, but that doesn't give the full freedom of proper GNU.

     @fiore @lizzie @djsumdog @kerosene It's highly compact object code that quite likely could be obfuscated heavily to prevent automatic removal of ads - so the only way to decline loading ads could possibly only be via network connections - but really the ads would probably be loaded via the same connection used to load the page.
     
     I'm not sure if extensions are even allowed to hook into the WASM VM like they can hook into JavaScript.

     @lizzie @fiore @djsumdog @kerosene Sure, but at least the most malicious JavaScript is typically loaded from external domains rather than the site one, which makes it easy to block.
     
     By chance, the way JS is implemented allows you to replace one piece at a time with Haketilo, while with WASM I believe you just get one fat binary that you'd need to replace all a once.
