If everyone at least drove cars more appropriately sized for their actual needs ("I NeEd A bIg SuV to fEeL sAfE!" doesn't count), I bet even just that change would reduce traffic, and smaller cars putting out less exhaust AND idling in traffic less... I'm not backing this with a bunch of research, just a hypothesis based on the bit of knowledge I already have, but I think that would help things already. Not enough, but every bit is better than nothing.
@allenstenhaus That's what drives me nuts. My car is an older station wagon. The majority of my drives, it's more than I need, but it's not feasible to have different cars for different times at my class level. (It gets 20 to 35 mpg, depending on how badly it needs service) Yet it is absolutely dwarfed by vehicles that can't transport nearly as much.
@hellomiakoda if I didn't need a truck bed on a regular basis, I'd still be driving a Kia Soul. I've been in bigger vehicles with less passenger space.
@sofiav Banning cars is kinda ablist. I'll use myself, for example. 1 - If I'm overwhelmed and need to go home, getting on a vehicle with more people in a smaller space is no good. 2 - I'm incontinent. If that goes wrong, I can't really get on public transport in that condition to get myself home.
@hellomiakoda the couple of times I tried driving a SmartCar (one of those half-length cars) it was so much more convenient than a full-sized car, but being near any pickup/SUV that was driving aggressively was TERRIFYING, so I get why those aren't more popular even though they'd be good enough for a lot of people
@GenXotaku1971 When my Nissan got totaled, Enterprise gave me a pretty new SUV. I hated it. I felt like I could run over a kid and not even be aware I did so. It was terrifying. And the non-optional lane assist followed the road markings in a construction area and almost took me in to a cement barrier. It literally fought against me as I struggled to wrestle control away from the system.
@hellomiakoda I had to rent a big-ass pickup truck once (Nissan Frontier) because my car got hit by a blacked out driver and had to get extensive body work and it was all Enterprise had for me at that moment on the lot. I hated driving it because I was always concerned about other drivers and keeping a safe distance from them. Parking was also not fun. Bigger did not make me feel "safer"...you'd have to be kind of a self-centered asshole to think like that, seems to me.
