@jeffcliff BTW genuine question: Are you serious about the "pandemic is still ongoing" thing or is it to troll anti vaxxers and stuff?
Actually I just found this which is seems like a surprisingly high number of deaths for 2.5 months. But I've no frame of reference.- Jeff "never puts away anything, especially oven mitts" Cliff, Bringer of Nightmares 🏴☠️🦝🐙 🇱🇧🧯 🇨🇦🐧 likes this.

@taylan ...and that's with the CDC's incomplete data. This should be seen as a lower bound but yeah I quit my job in '22 when my country's public health system decided to "let er rip" and have been mostly socially isolated ever since. The covid situation is ...not as bad right now where I am but with all the NYE Partying it'll surge back up again Taylan (Now 18% More Deranged) likes this. -

@jeffcliff It seems like about 40k people die by car accident in the US every year, which is about 8.3k per 2.5 months.
So, COVID still kills somewhat more people than car accidents. Perhaps up to 2x as many.
On the other hand, it's mostly people above 80 it seems. (Based on German data: Under 60 is very low, 60-80 is around 1/3 of deaths, and above 80 around 2/3. Source: https://infektionsradar.gesund.bund.de/de/covid/todesfaelle )
To me it doesn't seem that scary tbh. For someone of my age (~30), driving a car seems much more dangerous. -

@taylan @jeffcliff I am very tired (understatement) of govts and everyone else considering covid as a death/recovery disease. You should be far more worried about the consequences of repeated infections , personally and societally. It's creating a lot more disabled people, new onset chronic disease, and it disrupts immune system making people more vulnerable to everything else, of all ages. And it has damaged public health and common sense, washing your hands to avoid an airborne disease, removing even the previous levels of masking and isolation in cancer clinics etc. You also might want to consider the effect a vascular disease, which is what sars cov2 is, has on the brain. And why research into better testing stopped, why research into figuring out why some people and not others isn't an urgent priority. In conversation permalink -

@taylan it's not just death though, it gives comorbidities for later health challenges. If it was just death to be worried about, then, maybe but it also causes diabetes, lung damage, brain damage(which has impacted the driver safety numbers making them worse with time), etc In conversation permalink Taylan (Now 18% More Deranged) likes this. -

Covid ages your immune system & generally shortens your life. It makes senescence come sooner, including stuff like early onset dementia in childrenIn conversation permalink Taylan (Now 18% More Deranged) likes this. -

Any deaths from flus above 70 is just a proximal cause. The real cause is old age. Saying that old people died of a flu is like saying that aids patients died of a sinus infection.

and let's be realistic: it's women who are impacted most

@jeffcliff @taylan Only if you're being utilitarian about it. A deontologist might say that death by disease should be prevented regardless of age, whereas death by old age is unavoidable.

> deontological vs utilitarian terminal values
Right this might be a point of disagreement between @taylan you and I, but which of those are you?
> whereas death by old age is unavoidable.
I generally reject that - 'old age' is an amalgamation of other causes that can be determined and understood. Death is unavoidable. Entropy is unavoidable. Aging is just an avoidable, difficult to change default. In conversation permalink -
