Everyone is rightfully upset about this kind of stuff, but it's easy enough to fix.

Basically guy gets car that was in a wreck, now it won't start.
Turns out people that reinstalled windshield didn't plug in radar module that is behind the rearview. People are saying "oh my 90s car wouldn't do this!" - But even those era cars have safety interlocks against starters running when in gear.
The primary problem here is safety.
- If vehicles had better "diagnostics" modes, this wouldn't happen.
The secondary problem is systematic.
- If you have critical components on the same CAN bus as non-essential stuff, a vehicle can not work for dumb reasons.
I've seen videos of a rear sensor of some sort on a GM putting a vehicle into limp mode due to corrosion in the connector.

@yockeypuck it is undeniable a design problem, but not hard to fix. just like putting a union into a plumbing system, you can put things in CAN systems that split the portions up and don't make one failure destroy the whole thing.

@sickburnbro A system where this particular problem is easy enough to fix but is borderline-undiagnosable because there are six million problems like it is an unmaintainable system.

@s2208 no, the luigi method wouldn't fix this at all.

the Luigi method?

@s2208 this is a flaw in the entire industry that putting a new better boss in place wouldnt fix.
The video hoss poaster earlier today shows how the general employement system got where it is, and this is the same thing.

@yockeypuck @sickburnbro they design these systems poorly on purpose, it's a longstanding tradition in automotive engineering

@deprecated_ii @yockeypuck it's pretty simple, proper design of this stuff doesn't sell cars when the primary people the companies are targeting buy a new car every 5 years.

@sickburnbro I recently picked up up a 2012 TDI, I'm expecting to start a family in the next few years once we have a down payment saved up on a house. to replace my 82 VW Rabbit diesel. as frankly my love doesn't exactly enjoy riding in it (no AC, functionally 1 seatbelt in the front as idgaf ATM to weld a new belt clip on my driver's seat, it'll just be my racecar one day a a VR6, 2.5l 5cyl or a 24v 1.8t. I digress) and after deleting the emissions equipment I was pleasantly surprised at how little electronics are inside of it compared to other modern vehicles I've had to work on. Id drive that motherfucker of a cliff if I had to deal with this shit. CAN-BUS isn't inherently bad from my experience. but bad wiring is the no.1 cause. it's insane

@Desert_0asis yeah, I mean the CAN bus is a ok tradeoff. less wires overall makes for less things that can break. But it means that if the termination on the bus is off, it's just all fucked.

@sickburnbro So this is literally something an engineer can solve in like 5 minutes.
-

@WhitestTemplar I wouldn't say that. But it's not a problem without a solution.

@Desert_0asis I think a lot of people don't recognize how difficult automotive is to engineer for. You have moisture, vibration, heat and then sometimes freezing too. And people expect it to work flawlessly for 1000s of hours of operation.

@sickburnbro connectors in high heat high vibration areas are the bane of my existence

@eee @Desert_0asis There was a ton less technology in general in cars in the 60s. power steering for instance is something most people would be very unhappy without.

@sickburnbro @Desert_0asis we figured it out in the 60s

@sickburnbro @Desert_0asis Don't forget rodents. I had to repair some rodent chewed wiring a few months ago.

@NitroDubs @Desert_0asis honda makes a special rodent tape ( I appreciate the japanese humor putting dead mice on it )
-

@sickburnbro @Desert_0asis That tape is approximately $50 a roll. I use peppermint oil.

@NitroDubs @Desert_0asis yeah, it has I think habenero oil in it or something.
I've *heard* that the rodents love the wires that have the sheathing made from soy.

@eee @Desert_0asis These are both pretty cars, for sure. But I'm assuming you've driven cars older than from the 90s. There is a very noticeable difference in power.

@eee @Desert_0asis fuel injection is pretty nice and though a pain in the ass the newer radiator systems with the very long life coolant are nice too.

@sickburnbro @Desert_0asis technically 60s cars ran on 50s tech, all the modern bullshit introduced in the 70s only hurt except crumble zones and maybe ABS

@sickburnbro @Desert_0asis i did and i wish i could afford to keep one from the 60s running. but thatd be either having a home or having a good car.

@sickburnbro @eee @Desert_0asis For example, the 1990 M3 BMW had 192 horsepower, while the 2025 M3 has 473 hp. That's quite a difference.

@sickburnbro @eee @Desert_0asis long life coolant is a lie
“lifetime coolant” yeah lifetime of the radiator maybe if you don’t change it every 30-50k

@eee @sickburnbro @Desert_0asis Direct injection is boss, but they need to make the engine easier to service and use dual injectors like Toyota started doing (port during warmup, direct when warm).
-

@BowsacNoodle @eee @Desert_0asis all of this *can* be done. We can make bullet-proof engines again - but only if we stop pushing them to design things that test well and over-optimize for fuel efficency.

@stoner713 @eee @Desert_0asis sure, but power steering is also nice. I've driven a small amount without it. Maybe with a very light vehicle it is different, so if I were driving one of those old wooden british sports cars it would fine without it
