The kind that can genuinely cripple an economy if they decided to fuck off from work. The kind that the government has to pass laws to curtail their power to go on strike (because they learned that sending in soldiers and mercenaries to stop strikes is bad optics). These are unions representing dockworkers, commercial pilots, flight attendants, and railroad workers usually. The kind of people that can't easily be replaced by Chang, Pancho, nor Pajeet; whether at home or abroad. -

Hoss Delgado (hoss@shitpost.cloud)'s status on Sunday, 29-Dec-2024 10:51:10 JST Hoss Delgado Unions are a viable counterbalance to corporate power when they're treated as equivalent private organizations of individuals to the corporation and neither party is given special privileges or protections. Nobody should be forced to join a union to hold a job, the union can and should provide tangible benefits to its members that encourage voluntary membership. The only exception is the public sector, unions should be explicitly outlawed in all sectors government employment because it doesn't work in the same self-contained economic unit that a corporation does. -

Wolfgirl in Wheatfield (wgiwf@poa.st)'s status on Sunday, 29-Dec-2024 12:37:56 JST Wolfgirl in Wheatfield @Hoss @WilhelmIII @DemonSixOne @PraxisOfEvil @Nudhul I don't think anyone in a vacuum would have an issue with completely voluntary union membership and participation but you're on your own if you refuse to join, (although still protected by labor laws, ofc). The idea that you can just be able to freeload off an agreement that the union and by extension its members fought to get cannot in good faith be seen as anything other than an attack on the ability of the unions to negotiate for better conditions, hence "right to work" laws are essentially attempts to bust up unions.
Although, all this being said, unions are not a good replacement for actually moral labor laws. A loosely connected group of workers are no match for the combined forces of state and capital. And traditional trade guilds often forced their way into a seat at the table of power, because institutional power and not concessions are how you maintain what is rightfully owed to you. -

Wolfgirl in Wheatfield (wgiwf@poa.st)'s status on Sunday, 29-Dec-2024 12:37:57 JST Wolfgirl in Wheatfield @Hoss @WilhelmIII @DemonSixOne @PraxisOfEvil @Nudhul The problem with "right to work" legislation is allowing non-due paying workers in a union shop to get the benefits and leverage that the union provides without contributing.
Really, among the main reasons why unions in the US are as bad as they are in comparison to other places is at times criminal nature of the relationship between labor and management that in the union's place often ends up in a sort of protection racket, little different from the mafia in many regards—think about the whole situation with Jimmy Hoffa, instead of a legitimate alternative labor/economics political faction. Management is so scummy that the unions have to just as dirty to keep up with them. -

Yes, that's pretty much right. You can extend a fair bit of correctness to Marxist critique of the Capitalist system and various inputs and outputs it provides. But like the Capitalists, and all liberal derived forms of thought really, they take the "rational actor" as a given when holistic group dynamics explain human behavior much better.
