Unions are a viable counterbalance to corporate power when they're treated as equivalent private organizations of individuals to the corporation and neither party is given special privileges or protections. Nobody should be forced to join a union to hold a job, the union can and should provide tangible benefits to its members that encourage voluntary membership. The only exception is the public sector, unions should be explicitly outlawed in all sectors government employment because it doesn't work in the same self-contained economic unit that a corporation does.
