I have been in a place where we absolutely needed a specific person and had to jump through ridiculous hoops to prove that we couldn't hire some random American. And I have worked at a place where they were using H1B to hire Chinese to do Apache Struts, which even the least-educated Indian body shop can do in their sleep.
     
     It's also absolutely true that American universities churn out tons of students that can't do anything and probably can't learn. And that in many other places, people actually care about making their kids competitive, unlike the USA.

     @deprecated_ii this sounds great but Sometimes you know a guy and you want to hire that guy because you know he can do it and you don’t want to do a nationwide manhunt just to hire somebody that you don’t actually know anything about.
     
     The original reason I posted what I posted though is simply that a ton of people on here just think Indians are all dumb. It’s a loser position. Vivek Salamiswami may have been speaking out of ethnic chauvinism but there’s a grain of truth in what he’s saying and america needs to stop glorifying stupidity, fast.

     if a company wants the "competitive kids" from other countries, they can damn well pull up stakes and move to those countries instead
     
     if companies do not find degrees sufficient proof of ability, they can put in the effort to figure out who does have ability. I have absolutely zero sympathy for organizations who brag about spending 7-10 seconds looking at each candidate's resume only to turn around and bitch about how bad the workforce is. they have no idea what the workforce has to offer because they treat it like a college girl flipping through tinder

It’s just sort of funny that they only got let into the country at all because of Americans refusing to have an ingroup preference and in the process just replacing themselves

     @sun Policy cannot be based on outliers. Just because there's 1 woman in 10000 that can hang in an infantry unit, it doesn't mean we should let women into infantry units. It's much better to simply accept losing that one unicorn to have a simpler, clearer policy overall. It's not fair? Life's not fair.
     
     I don't believe there's a problem with talent in america as a result of "glorifying stupidity". We produce plenty of kids who do great in math and science, who then go on to get relevant STEM degrees. And then most of them are never able to find work in their field. The excuse then becomes oh well gee I guess they just suck, except I don't see that there's any relationship between ability in the field and ability to find *work* in that field. The C student has the right connections and cruises into a cushy engineering job, while the A student ends up working some shitty office job that could be done by anyone with an 8th grade education. Graduation year is 10x more influential on your success than how hard you work in school or what major you choose.
     
     America is not utilizing the resources it has. It prefers to pretend those resources don't exist, while preying on the young people who do want to work hard by encouraging them to take on huge amounts of debt, lying to them from birth about opportunities that do not actually exist for them. This cannot continue.

     @KuteboiCoder @sun No, it can't. We're reaching the end of the grift. America is not a magical treasure box that can be plundered forever. Younger people are increasingly dropping out, correctly seeing that they have no prospects. The military can't get enough recruits. College enrollment among men is in steep decline. Infrastructure that was pushed decades beyond its design life is failing and the foreign replacements can't fix it. Increasingly, America is a country where nothing gets done.

As far as the rest, I mean just look around. There absolutely is entitlement and anti intellectualism. I’m not even arguing against protectionism for American kids I’m just pointing out the simple fact that your protected businesses will lose competitively.

     The foreign applicants are not out of reach to #Elon; he's literally the richest dude in the world and his companies have satellite offices all over the world.
     
     So that means the sacrifices that #MAGA is asked to make - muh culture, muh housing market, muh beautiful white women's virtue - are ultimately for no net benefit whatsoever, where #STEM #progress is concerned.

     There's a lot of infrastructure that can't be fixed/replaced that needs to be. Old dams are a big one; things that expanded too fast under the New Deal that weren't viable and are now a liability.
     
     But it's silly to think America isn't still doing infrastructure. There was a massive interstate redesign 5 minus from me that's coming along really well; 2~3 year long project. New housing is everywhere. It's made with a lot of pex pipe instead of copper, but it's still up to code and not falling apart like the tofu cities of China.
     
     There are large infrastructure projects everywhere, and there are a lot of Americans out there in the heat, building concrete curb edges, laying asphalt and driving dump trucks.
     
     There are some infrastructure maintenance burdens coming due. I'm surprised the Brent Spence Bridge in Cincinnati hasn't collapsed yet, but it looks like it's finally getting its replacement started next year.

     India has infrastructure. Not great, but it's gotten better. They also have a really corrupt corporate system. They're also not anywhere as authoritarian as China. Parts of China have amazing infrastructure. A lot of the designs for it are bought or stolen from other countries. Some of it is falling apart .. horrifically .. killing many when a train station transformer blows. Like the early coal/oil fields in early America. India could have amazing infrastructure if it with authoritarian. So could America if they government started demolishing homes. That's why Russia has high speed rail.
     
     Irish, Germans, Russians, Italians and all sorts of people flocked to the US at one time. This is a brain drain problem around the entire world. No one wants to stay in their homes and make things better.
     
     Honestly, after reading all the bullshit everyone is saying, I wish god would drop a nuke on the failed experiment that is humanity.

     Infrastructure was not the primary topic, but it's an interesting derivative.

     It's only a matter of time before the people that know how to build and maintain modern infrastructure in the west decides to check-out completely. There will be no need or desire to maintain and preserve infrastructure to support a society of foreign people. White people are going to 'nope' out and start dialing-back.

     If Indians were able to manage to build and maintain infrastructure, they wouldn't flock to the US. There appears to be cultural barriers that prevent them from creating a society that their people want to stay within.
