@jwildeboer but how that work along with for instance a Dutch person's right to vote in the Dutch parliamentary elections when they live outside of the EU? At this point, especially in more eastern European countries, the votes from abroad have significant effect on the outcome of elections.

I think in the end it boils down to a philosophical question on the meaning of citizenship. One could argue we need a EU citizenship before we could move there. I do hope your goal will become reality!!

EU citizens living in a different EU country (like me, a dutch person, living in Germany) do not have full voting rights, but we can vote on the municipal level and for the EU parliament. Thus it logically follows that if we have at least these limited voting rights, we should definitely be allowed to be active as members of a political party. The court has made this very clear in its decision. #ThanksEU

@jwildeboer that makes sense, but I presume you'd need to adopt German citizenship then?

@ghouston @jwildeboer you are not able to register your address at a municipality because of the lack of ID? I hope you will be able to overcome this! Once you have a registration and receive a voting card, you wouldn't need an updated passport to cast the vote.
Important to be aware is that expired Dutch passports often can also be used to vote. I once even voted using a passport which had holes in it that the municipality put when I picked up a newer one. Always keep your old Dutch passports!

@jschwart @jwildeboer countries put various obstacles in the way. I couldn't vote in the Netherlands, despite having Dutch citizenship, because I don't have a current passport so can't register (and it would cost a lot to get one, including travel to Sydney). I also have New Zealand citizenship, but couldn't vote there either, because I haven't visited for years. I live in Australia, but can't vote here because I'm not a citizen.

@ghouston @jwildeboer I guess that initial registration would need a valid ID in your scenario. The situation where you can get by with an expired one is when you are registered already and show up to cast the vote. At least within Dutch municipalities.

It would be great if you could vote in the future, but you'd probably need to get at least a new Dutch ID card.

@jschwart @jwildeboer in principle, I can register in Den Haag. I had the impression that it requires a current passport. Well, it says "een geldig Nederlands paspoort" or "een geldige Nederlandse identiteitskaart". And then you have to print off some form and post it(!)
