@lain the "spatialize stereo" feature is kinda nice for normalizing things center-ish without going full mono lainy likes this. -

@why oh i should try that. I'm just using 'play as mono' when there's another youtuber who put everything into the left channel by accident -

@lain there's no saving that. spatialize just fixes bad stereo mixes by making it sound like 2 speakers in front of you, as opposed to two speakers directly in your ears lainy likes this. -

@lain@lain.com I can do this too.
Just use pacmd to create a remap sink with mono,mono channel map.
pacmd load-module module-remap-sink sink_name=mono master=<alsa_output> channels=2 channel_map=mono,mono -

@lain@lain.com I do have to say once you execute this command you seemlessly switch between these two sinks in your favorite DEs graphical audio manager be it KDE or GNOME or whatever.
If a distro included this as a default sink it would be just as easy as on MacOS. -

@lain Absolutely degenerate.
There is a lot of free software that will downmix half channel stereo or stereo to mono, for example mpv has that option, plus ALSA can downmix to mono and of course there's much more.
Of course, instead of enjoying freedom, you surrender your freedom to apple. -

MPV is great.
It's 2024, use pipewire. -

@sepples @lain Pipewire is bloat - you should just use pure ALSA.
Ah yes, there's a nazi who is so hopeless they they don't realize pulseaudio goes on top of ALSA and any OSS support is usually via a OSS-ALSA translation layer. -

@Suiseiseki @lain MPV is a convoluted piece of shite. At least use software a sane person could easily use, like quicktime multimedia player.
(Also, ALSA is unironic fucking dogwater. Use OSS or PulseAudio instead). -

@sepples No idea as I've never need a use for anything like that, as I don't usually have mics to listen to me on my computers and when I do, I just adjust the mic to fix any noise issue.
ALSA supports plugins, so it's a matter of adding a noise suppression plugin in addition to the current ones; https://www.alsa-project.org/alsa-doc/alsa-lib/pcm_plugins.html -
