@emilygorcenski I can see you weren’t asking for suggestions, but … would it be helpful to make the floor reinforcement into a small hollow plinth? You could then reroute under the machines, and raise them so their water drains/filters aren’t right down at ground level.

Also, pure curiosity, why is the walling not for use in Canada?

@wilbr @emilygorcenski Yeah drain hose shoved into the pipe is how it’s supposed to work. If the supply hoses weren’t leaking it’s probably fine that they weren’t tighter. At least it does look like your drain is properly vented which is a plus.

@emilygorcenski FYI idk how exactly washer drain pipes work but in general you do want the hose to just be shoved loosely into the larger pipe (with reasonable leeway so it doesn't fall out) because you want air to enter into the larger pipe and you don't want to get an airlock siphoning type action going on and stuff. (I was nervous about my own drain hose and looked that part up)

@acsawdey @emilygorcenski also if water leaks are a concern, leak alarms are about $15-30 online. I got a pack of IoT ones for under $50. Apparently water leaks are one of the most common and expensive forms of damage so it makes sense to get these along with smoke detectors etc

@emilygorcenski @wilbr That sounds bad, yeah. One unbalanced load in the washer …

@acsawdey @emilygorcenski yeah the supply sounds awful for sure, just don't want y'all doing this common mistake and then ending up with sewage siphoned into your laundry. Best wishes for a successful remodel!

Edit: here's a photo of typical drain installation instructions. You do want about 5" of hose in the drain pipe, secured with a cable tie and room for air to flow.

@emilygorcenski If you can make those turns with 45° fittings rather than 90s, it will be less likely to clog and easier to snake out if it does. If that doesn't work, definitely opt for "long " 90s, which have a gentler slope than standard elbows!

@emilygorcenski I‘m always surprised that this is such an issue in other markets (read: specifically, North America) since we’re mostly using lint traps in dryers in Europe .. a curious difference

@emilygorcenski could you swap in a ventless drier? Heat pump driers don't need vents, they only emit water

@emilygorcenski I've lived in place where the dryer vent situation was comparable, we just made sure to clean it regularly (approximately annually).

I was a paid drywall mudder for a while. Took until my 3rd day before I wasn't sanding all my joins to fix them.

@emilygorcenski we see a vent in the ceiling, implying that this machine may be gas-based

make SURE to ventilate the space well. you do NOT want to breath carbon monoxide, it can have lasting effects

@emilygorcenski Ah, so the back edge of the floor is unsupported because it ends for the stairs. Yeah a small application of structural steel would probably help it.

well done! happy to see your water shutoffs for the washer are accessible. After a friend had a flood from a new washer, I insisted mine were accessible and I keep them turned off when not using the washer. Love the wall color!

It looks wonderful! I couldn’t tell before where it would fall in relation to the appliances, but since it was already in, I didn’t want to say “hey, maybe you should put them…” 🤣🤣
      A worthy remodeling project
