   First, this is meant for women in this demographic. You will see plenty more of it all your life, as a form of palliative care/encouragement. I haven’t even read it yet but I’m gonna point to the outfield and guess that it’s going to be that ‘good men’ aren’t in the same white collar professional circles as these women, and the girls just aren’t ready to date a dude who (theoretically) makes less than they do.

I know their political beliefs are basic bitch-flavored liberalism. I know they are "spiritual, but not religious". I know their "careers" are in something meaningless like "marketing" or "human resources". What's left to talk about? Some interrogation where they suss out some political belief of mine and then tell me I'm wrong because the TV says so? Sounds riveting. 🙄

     1. No, guys largely have given up on taking a woman out to a pricey dinner. Most of us will do it a few times but either get mocked for it or burned by girls going all-out and racking up a $300 tab.

     2. Younger guys don’t date in the usual sense, can’t afford it and the decline in manners means it’s seen as stuffy and try-hard to an extent. A surprising number of young women probably haven’t ever gone on a good old-fashioned date in their entire lives, either doing group hangouts or simple fast food and tv stay-ins.

     In this lady’s case, she’s pumped because the guy is in charge and taking her to a brag-worthy spot, so she gets to at least snag a story to make her competing roasties jealous.

     Most young guys don't date because women have systematically removed and destroyed every 'third place' (i.e. a casual hangout that doesn't cost money that people from all walks of life go to to socialize). Now, outside of friends-of a friend, the only way to consistently meet new women are bars/clubs/online dating, which obviously filters for a certain kind of women and reduces the characteristics of judgement to just looks/status.
     
     It's hard to meet women my age outside of going to bars, single women aren't going to hiking clubs or hobby meetups, and if they do, they aren't staying single for long.

     Most women, esp when young are not capable of rational decisions/behavior. Parents can make more levelheaded, rational decisions for their children. And almost always they want the best their children can reasonably aspire to. Hence arranged marriages.

     I think having and raising children, and getting older, does make them more rational. Less hormone swings too.
     
     Young men are full of testosterone at a constant level. Girls have wild hormone swings that explains a lot of their erratic behavior.

If there's an emergency, it's a compact, portable chunk of wealth she can sell to get out of trouble, or support the family, etc. And if she gets divorced or widowed, she can sell the ring and use it to get her footing or set up a new house. The rule for men is it should cost "two month's salary", because you are essentially giving her 2 month's living expenses as a cushion (or parachute). Modern expensive weddings are absolutely a status symbol though. The traditional wedding is held in a nearly-free communal building (church or social hall). The big elaborate or event weddings are aping political weddings of nobility and royalty, big events that were necessary to display the familial/political alliance. They are literal fairy tale fantasies you go into debt for.

     I can see the argument about the ring as a safety cushion. If you go that route, do not buy big, expensive diamonds because their resale value is abysmal. Buy something that would actually work as a safety.

     Expensive rings and large, fancy weddings exist for dumb wahmen to impress their social circle. A simple plain gold ring and a wedding with closest family and friends is perfectly fine. Spending a little on the honeymoon to make it memorable makes sense.

     My wedding + honeymoon ran probably $15-18k in 2010s money. 300ish guests. I paid the caterer and our airfare to Central America, about $5k. Another $5k for the ring. Her mom paid the venue, her dad paid for dresses, my groomsmen paid their own tuxes, my parents paid the preacher and the bar, my grandparents paid the honeymoon hotel.

Jane and friends are basically complaining that they don't get the good parts of their life choices, AND the good parts of women who took the other path.      @caekislove @WashedOutGundamPilot Hey now. That's a little too much oversimplification of their jobs, wouldn't you say? Sometimes they have to send emails, and that can be stressful! You don't know how hard it is to do BOTH PowerPoint presentations and sending emails. Sometimes you get uncomfortable sitting in your chair too long or the AC is going just a little too strong but not strong enough to put on another layer of clothes.
