    As YouTube seems to be going increasingly ad-heavy, have had many requests to do posts about how to get into #PeerTube.

    PeerTube is an ad-free video platform on the Fediverse. You can follow and interact with PeerTube accounts from Mastodon etc. When a PeerTube account posts a video, it will appear in your Mastodon timeline just like any post, and you can like, share, reply etc.

    I just did a long thread of good PeerTube accounts to follow over on @FediFollows (https://social.growyourown.services/@FediFollows/110917302291902468).

      PeerTube content still has a long way to go, and the network effect on YouTube is unhealthily strong, but as YouTube keeps tightening its grip there are ever-increasing numbers of publishers and viewers looking for alternatives.

      If you're a viewer, you can follow, watch and interact with PeerTube accounts entirely from within Mastodon etc. You don't need to be on PeerTube yourself, your Mastodon etc account is enough.

      I'll post tomorrow about options for publishing videos on PeerTube.

      @pax

      You can use PeerTube for audio, and the latest version of PeerTube includes support for podcast feeds that are compatible with podcast apps.

      (PeerTube has always had RSS, but the latest update makes it more suitable for podcasts.)

      If you upload an audio file to PeerTube, you can optionally add an image too or just leave the screen blank.

      Alternatively, there's an audio-specific platform on the Fediverse called @funkwhale, more info about it at https://funkwhale.audio

      p.s. I run an account at @FediVideo which boosts interesting videos from PeerTube.

      Also, if you just want to browse a PeerTube site, I run a private server at https://fedi.video which federates nice safe accounts from across the Fediverse (no NSFW, no conspiracy theories, no bigotry etc).

      Yeah, video will always be more demanding than text or images!

      However, you don't need to be techy, you can use managed hosting services to run a PeerTube server. Will post more about this and other options tomorrow.

      You can include sponsors in videos on any platform including PeerTube. That's what @thelinuxexperiment does for example.

      You can also have donation links promoted within the videos.

      The actual in-video ads on YouTube are providing less and less income to ordinary video makers. That's why most indpenedent video accounts nowadays have a sponsor and/or feature donation links, even on YouTube.

      I'll be covering this tomorrow, but the options are either joining an existing server or starting your own.

      Starting your own can be through a managed hosting company (non-technical), through something like Yunohost (slightly technical) or doing manual installation (very technical).

      Yeah, that's why I said the content still has a long way to go.

      The reason YouTube is so comprehensive is because of the network effect: publishers go to the audience, the audience goes to the publisher, Google ends up controlling them both.

      I will be covering how to publish videos on PeerTube tomorrow. Just like Mastodon, you have to pick a server to publish on, or start your own.

      @Rob300

      A couple of issues with the search:

      - PeerTube content still in very early days, so people will usually not find videos for what they are searching for.

      - Moderation isn't always the best on the official search page, it's using blocklists rather than allowlists so sometimes nasty stuff gets through.

      That was part of the reason I set up https://fedi.video, so that there would be a searchable site which uses allowlists to keep it safer.

      @feditips @FediFollows Hey feditips, how can we make it easier for people who just want to view content on peertube, but sorta how it is like on Youtube. I actually have a suggestion, Sepia search. Check it out here. https://search.joinpeertube.org/

      Essentially it gathers videos from a good chunk of peertube servers and makes it easy to find out what's even available throughout peertube.

      What do you think of this, and would you suggest it to people?

      I've just done a thread about signing up at https://mstdn.social/@feditips/110923388035767741

      You can import content from YouTube to PeerTube, either by manually reuploading the video files or automatically grabbing them from your YouTube channel.

      Uploading manually gets you the best quality because it is the original, whereas importing from YouTube means it has been reprocessed/degraded by Google.

      (The instructions for importing are at https://docs.joinpeertube.org/use/channel-sync)

However, if you want to publish videos on PeerTube you will need a PeerTube account. This can be either on someone else's PeerTube server, or you can start your own PeerTube server. You cannot use your Mastodon account on PeerTube. Signing up for PeerTube is where it gets a tiny bit more complicated than Mastodon etc. 1/4

      Late yes. But PeerTube needs some more development in some areas. I wish I keep up with my coding I would work on some improvements I would like to see.

      I still need to find an instance to post to it myself. But I, personally, think it needs some old-fashioned vloggers.

      I looked at the Peertube road map and I like the direction it is headed and I see it taking off in the next year or so.
