Ned Yeung (ned@mstdn.ca)'s status on Tuesday, 08-Aug-2023 00:27:11 JST Ned Yeung @thomasfuchs Agreed, and it brings a false belief that EVs are a solution, which is what big industry wants us to believe. Car ownership causes the absolutely worst urban design problems all of our cities face. They are the greatest cost to public infrastructure and human safety, while shutting out accessibility. Car ownership is a major problem. Pretending that it's primarily an environmental problem, or that EVs solve any problems at all, is all misdirection to keep all big industries strong.

Roger Sen (rogersm@mastodon.social)'s status on Tuesday, 08-Aug-2023 03:18:39 JST Roger Sen @thomasfuchs but car contamination are not only greenhouse gases. Also is a kind of pollution that happens where the majority of the world population lives: cities.

artemist (artemist@social.mildlyfunctional.gay)'s status on Thursday, 10-Aug-2023 11:41:15 JST artemist @thomasfuchs Unfortunately greenhouse gasses aren't the only problem with cars, especially in cities. They produce huge amounts of noise pollution, infrastructure wear, PM2.5, take up lots of space, and are extremely unsafe to people around them. Electric cars will also require massive amounts of lithium and increase road wear issues.
Banning plastic straws doesn't really help anything, but banning cars in cities would make cities more pleasant even ignoring CO2.

It's a fully developed and mature technology that is the one of most efficient (in terms of energy *and* resources) way to transport people. Just gotta build them.

Mallory's Musings & Mischief (malcircuit@thingy.social)'s status on Thursday, 10-Aug-2023 12:06:27 JST Mallory's Musings & Mischief We can't just flip a switch to make everything EVs either. That's going to take decades too.
Except it isn't clear how we're going to source all the lithium and other rare earth elements to actually make all of the vehicles it would require. We also have to massively build out the electrical grid to power all the chargers we need, and supply the necessary electricity. And in general, having every person own their own car is insanely inefficient.

Mallory's Musings & Mischief (malcircuit@thingy.social)'s status on Thursday, 10-Aug-2023 12:13:11 JST Mallory's Musings & Mischief I could make the same argument for trains. Make building any new road infrastructure illegal, and use that money to build railroads instead. Nationalize the rail industry.
