I feel like my Mastodon feed must be quite unpleasant to read lately as all I've been doing is ranting about being annoyed at computers. In my defense tho computers are very annoying

@mcc half of why I follow you is because I enjoy your rants about computers (when I can understand them at least)

@mcc Oh actually, I'm always happy when someone dislikes git. Makes me feel way less alone hating it in a world where people generally thinks it's the one to use in every scenario, despite that it's terrible at everything.

      Oh, it was about git.

There are people who don't hate git?

I love git, but that doesn't mean I don't hate it. Not hating git is just being ignorant of how good things could be.

@AngryAnt @Nifflas @mcc Haha. Same. Git often makes me grumpy, but every alternative I've tried always makes me more grumpy. >_< I used to think that Subversion was the bee's niece, but it feels so unproductive to me now. :-\

@Nifflas @mcc Using git all over the place for a decade and a half, in all sorts of projects & functions, with decent skill at juggling more advanced flows, I still don’t grok how someone can actually _like_ it.

I appreciate systemic aspects just like I might appreciate a database design. Still doesn’t mean I’d be doing data entry by query writing and liking it.

TLDR; Implementation is great, level of abstraction is ridiculous, people presumably have Stockholm syndrome?

@AngryAnt I'm just not smart enough to use it. I've actually used it a lot, but everything always goes wrong.

Like, writing a sampler and phase modulation synth in C++? Figured it out pretty quickly. git tho? I mean, I know the core concepts in it, but somehow I still mess up everything I do.

@Nifflas The trick to using git well is not to be smart, the trick is you start and never stop using it daily starting from 2005 and you internalize the quirks as they are added.

Plan B if it is no longer 2005 and not possible to do the above is to have a friend or colleague who did this.

@AngryAnt @MouseByTheSea @Nifflas @mcc Worse... My first "real job" used a VSS knockoff called SourceGear Vault. Not only was it painful, and had zero merge functionality (we maintained 6 active branches O_o), but it consistently blue screened Vista if you locked the screen while it was open!

@MouseByTheSea @slembcke @Nifflas @mcc I never saw eye to eye with Perforce. I feel like it and I are from two different worlds and installing it feels like inviting in an adversary to fight for control of my files ;)

@mcc @Nifflas oh shoot i forgot about this but when Unity bought(?) it I think they changed it to be a Unity only thing? Now it’s part of the ‘Unity Dev Ops’ service.. something tells me they don’t have non-Unity use cases in mind

@evn @mcc Haha! I'm on Plastic SCM now. I love it, since I could pick it up right away and it all made sense from the very start. Handles large files and empty folders.

Drawback is it's not open source and that it's hosted by Unity, but it's cheap. And it's not like an engagement, I can always jump ship instantly to another if it goes bad :)
