Having a logo design contest is exploitative to designers. Especially for a huge company.

Logo design is something everyone thinks they can do, but really? No you can't.

    The new logo is terrible.

Twitter's name and branding was one of the valuable things Musk bought! And twitter's branding was top notch-- and probably not free.

It's contempt for creative work. The implosion continues.

I think many people here associate "branding" with growth.

I get that tech culture taught us that we need to grow to survive, but that's not actually true.

We just need to survive to survive.

I know it's easy to make fun of logo designers and the mystical abstract things they talk about-- but it's just one of those things that when it works it really works.

The fediverse has a massive branding problem-- but also a legitimate excuse: it's not easy to do branding in this context.

There isn't any real fediverse logo. Most people call it "Mastodon" -- which simply isn't correct.

Amazing to see a big company want to emulate the troubles of those with no ad budget.

For me it's about regrouping the effective activist communities that have been destroyed at twitter.

Branding is one of the reasons blueSky and the others get mentioned on the news and by content creators while we get ignored despite having a lot of success.

If these communities end up regrouping on some corporate site I'll *need* to go there. That's why I care about growth. I know those communities would be much safer here.

      Exactly This.

      I feel this so much.

And frankly? If blueSky or whatever is where people "end up" -- where the communities I care about are I'll go there.

And then in 5 or 6 years when some right wing reactionary buys that company (or when the people who own it now, want to shut down political movements that are contrary to their interests) we'll all move again.

Or... maybe ... we could try to fix the reason this keeps happening. I still have hope.

Honestly, I *DO* wish Mastodo-, I mean, The Fediverse were more popular. I left a bunch of awesome people on Twitter after Apartheid Enthusiast Musk took over, and I haven't interacted with them since. Makes me sad, and I wish they were here.

I cannot deal with this "no it's good that we aren't popular" subtext -- it's so snooty and seems like something that may have been learned over the quiet years here--

"Oh! I love my obscure social media app... no *you* wouldn't have heard of it... it requires a certain... technical sophistication...*puff* *puff*"

I mean-- I like it here too and all but can we NOT?

@Divorytaur @futurebird if you just want the totally unprofitable leftovers that businesses do not want to have in community hand that is a viable strategy. If you want community owned prime infrastructure that is the pride (and envy) of the industry it isn’t.

Don’t be foolish, we need something good, something we will defend, not whatever scarce meagre leftovers are not worthy of other’s attention.

@futurebird I’m glad the fediverse isn’t very commercially viable… Any kind of (self) promotional characteristic combined with current economics will lead to business and efficiency models. That’s mainly about selling differences for the people using it. Being ‘professional’ about something means losing diversity.

@futurebird This step makes me think more and more that perhaps the -goal- is to destroy twitter. But something about malice and incompetence and such.

      @wmd

Isn't Gov. Ron DeSantis *suing* companies for just this?

That whole suing Bud Light for trying to sell beer to people who aren't transphobes thing?

Seems like what Musk is doing is a more stark example of "not focusing on the bottom line"
