Sexy MoonLain is right, also fedi is a bubble, albeit a decently big one. like lol, "twitter is dying" it has over 100x as many ACTIVE users than fedi has SIGN-UPS. "the site broke for a while because elon is stupid" no one cares lol, fedi servers implode every week from incompetent administrators and people just come back when the admin reinstalls on a new subdomain
The ability to go down and pop back up is actually a point of strength, not weakness. Twitter can be attacked from all sorts of angles, economic or political. The fediverse is like swatting flies. There will be a lot of misses, and the flies just show back up across the room.
@Moon "no i'm not moving to akkoma nor *key nor *don" "hey i made a semi-public instance for all'y'all because my personal instance is too spicy and has shitty domain, no i'm not moving to it to not draw fire to it, no i'm not deprecating either. yes i'm financing both out of my pocket because i'm autistic, yes i will do it until i die"
@Moon@Humpleupagus bunch of people think of complete nonsense, so what? Let's just enjoy what we have and make it better. I don't see phone companies trying to find a way to pass material objects over copper wire just because mail can do that and it's "more successful" because of that.
@hj@Humpleupagus the perfect is the enemy of the good but I am increasingly thinking that activitypub is not the future, it's a mess that is just going to become a more and more unmanageable mess.
@lanodan@romin@Moon I read #honk release notes once and it was like "this should probalby be our final update, becaue if we add anything else it will defeat its own purpose" #purple
@methyltheobromine@clacke@Moon when did it not? I've had near 0 problems in 17 months, well at least on this instance. My buddy paid a guy from #fiverr to set up antizuckbook.com and its never really worked. I tried one evening to help him out, but he wouldn't share his admin password so I didn't get very far.
@deutrino@hj@lanodan@Moon I follow several lemmy communities from #Friendica, and threading works fine, looks no different than this long hell thread save the first post always has a TITLE and is clearly a "re-toot" of the OP.
#Maston's handling where each post/comment looks like a single re-toot makes it nearly impossible to follow, especially with the added traffic with the #RedditMigration. I had to stop following @memes from my masto account because reasons.
I've personally not yet ever seen a threaded Lemmy comment properly rendered in its thread on microblogging fedi - my experimental Pleroma instance wasn't able to display Lemmy comments *at all* when I tried a week or two ago, but I'm running what was the latest stable release from ~May, so I dunno where it (or Akkoma) is now in terms of support.
@lanodan I don't think there's even any threading at this point, comments are just spewed one by one, unless the situation changed since last week or I'm misunderstanding @hj@Moon
@Moon one microblogging-fedi post for *every single comment* in a lemmy community is completely unusable on the microblogging side for communities with any traffic at all @lanodan@hj
@Moon@hj Meh, and so who would be the "bad implementations of AP"? Because I think this would be a massive mess, I'd rather just go RFC-style with "that's the way things are for all of us" kind of reports instead of bullshit top-down standards.
@hj@Moon Yeah, I'd say fedi has already been a success for a while because it managed to become standalone years ago where it's not just "Twitter/*chan/IRC/… users using this weird GnuSocial thing on the side".
And the number of users doesn't really matters unless you're someone like an advertiser, what matters is for people to find existing or new friends and have fun, I'd say it's been doing pretty well on that front.
@deutrino@hj@lanodan@Moon I was going to share a direct link to show, but it looks like you need to log int to actually see it. That being said, I think it actually looks BETTER on Friendica than on Lemmy, particularly as for some reason imgur links dont' show up as expected on lemmy and it looks fine on Friendica. I guess old habits die hard as all the new kids over there default to using imgur rather than uploading directly.
@methyltheobromine Friendica has stable AP support since about 4 years. I don't remember it being shaky even in the first couple of months, it worked pretty well out of the gate.
The only issue was that it took Friendica about a year to get AP, but it took Mastodon and Pleroma about half a year to discontinue OStatus, so there was a bit of a gap.
@clacke@Humpleupagus yeah I think the success that matters is, does the free and open platform attract people that are interesting. if you are not free and open you are automatically disqualified because the future needs to belong to humans and not corporations, sorry for getting "political"
@methyltheobromine@fu@Moon Yeah ok, excessive notifications was a thing, but that wasn't a problem for Friendica users, only for everyone else, so I forgot about it. 🤣
That was resolved after the first year or so, I was in the discussions but don't remember exactly.
The first time I heard about Friendica, back in Friendika days and before pump.io or anything, it already had OStatus or I wouldn't have bothered.
@clacke@fu@Moon I think this was before AP. did friendica ever use ostatus? the issues we had was friendica randomly mentioning users in posts, so you'd get unintended notifications
