   THREAD: I made a series of images for an Instagram post I made about migrating to the fediverse. I figured I'd share with anyone else who wants to use, so I included some blank template versions too. DM if you'd like the Adobe Illustrator file so you can make your own edits. And please,comment if I got anything wrong so I can correct it.

     @janeadams Fun Fact: Mastodon is the only software which has a hardcoded length of 500 letters (and many instances patched that) so there is no need for something like threads :blobcatrainbow:

     @Jain I only see 4 images though. I'm on desktop but I checked on Tusky and it's the same. Is it a server-by-server thing?

     Different platforms, connected via ActivityPub.
     Same if I post on Calckey, my limit is 4K chars. On Mastodon, I see 500 + a link to read more...

     You can set your instance up to not be indexed by sites like google. That being said, you are at the mercy of other instances who do allow indexing.
     
     That being said, only your public posts (not part of a thread) are usually searchable without an account.
     
     As far as other accounts it depends on your instances admin settings and personal settings to how searchable content is.

     @janeadams @Jain you're welcome. Well, that's the demonstration of what the Fediverse, based on ActivityPub at least (which has flaws too, of course), is.
     DIfferent platforms are able to exchange info via a communication protocol.
     As an example, my WordPress blogs, equipped with the ActivityPub plugin, are now part of the Fediverse too, and are seen as instances ("servers") you can subscribe to, see posts (automatically published) and comment, just like you would "normally"...

     Searchable within fedi but not via google
     
     You can block the google crawlers with an html file (I think) and most instances do this instance wide but some dont

     @bot Thanks for the edit -- what I meant was that Truth Social uses ActivityPub. I edited to remove mention of any specific instances to avoid misrepresentation and to possibly quell the absolute deluge of vitriol I am now getting 🥴 Let me know if you have other edits

     @cybeardjm @janeadams yes, tbh i guess i shouldnt talk about not making threads or at least leave a hint that not every instance can understand everything... its like every server can have its own ways to interpret things like the amount of pictures and the amount of letters in a post... or even more features like emoji reactions and way more

     @Jain @janeadams emojis are a good example, as depending on which sets were uploaded to an instance, they might appear or not... or have different names ( :fedi: or :fediverse: don't both render everywhere).
     There are many differences between platforms (software), and even inside the same platform, servers can be patched or modified for different use cases.

     @emma Right, I had made an edit to that one based on earlier comments. What I had meant to say was that it also uses ActivityPub, but I see now that it's better to just talk about defederation generally rather than making mention of any one instance.
