Each hub, or ‘instance’ in the fediverse is a server, a community of shared interest. But you can see and interact with people on other hubs! Anna is on server Q, and Bob is on server X. Server Q federates with server X. Anna and Bob can see and like each others’ posts because their servers federate with one another. A network diagram is shown to explain this. Side note: Networks can federate because they use the same data protocol - information is stored in the same format (ActivityPub) across all servers in the fediverse.
