The what? You may have heard recently about “the fediverse”, or new social platforms like Mastodon and PixelFed. Why are people leaving traditional social apps like Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, and Reddit? Because these are centralized social media platforms, which means that they have one ‘hub’ of control, which decides things like what it costs, where your data goes, who is banned, and what the ad-to-content ratio is (high!).
