  Nikolai Kornilievich Bodarevsky (Russian: Николай Корнилиевич Бодаревский; 6 December 1850 – 1921) was a Ukrainian-born Russian painter and art professor; associated with the Peredvizhniki. Biography He was born to a family of the old Moldavian nobility and his father was a Titular Councillor. He graduated from the Odessa Art School, which was a branch of the Imperial Academy of Arts. From 1869 to 1873, he attended the academy, where he studied with Pyotr Shamshin, Timofey Neff and Vasily Petrovich Vereshchagin. During his time there, he was awarded four silver and two gold medals. In 1875, he was named an "Artist", first-class, for his depiction of Saint Paul explaining Christianity to King Herod Agrippa. In 1880, he began to exhibit with the Peredvizhniki. He became a member in 1884 and continued exhibiting with them until 1918. After becoming acquainted with the works of Whistler, he painted numerous female portraits in a similar style, including one of the Tsarina Alexandra Feodorovna. 1. Most importantly — and ironically, given the libertarian ideology that used to be pervasive in the crypto world — crypto has become very much a political asset. In 2024 the industry invested huge sums getting Donald Trump elected and in general electing friendly politicians, and since then has spent even larger sums directly enriching Trump and his family. These investments have paid off. Some of the payoffs have involved the president's pardon power: In November Forbes — Forbes! — published an article titled “Trump's crypto cronies: They sent the president money — and got off easy.” But there was also a huge financial payoff: Crypto-friendly policies and the perception that the U.S. government would actively promote crypto assets helped fuel a huge rise in the prices of Bitcoin and other assets. The chart at the top shows that a large part of the rise in crypto values since the previous crypto winter came in a post-election surge. As | wrote last October, crypto has become a Trump trade. Now almost all of that surge is gone. Bitcoin sold for about $69,000 just before the 2024 election; it reached a peak of almost $125,000; but just before this post went live it was under $71,000. How much of that reversal reflects Trump's cratering approval and doubts about whether he can or will deliver the crypto-friendly policies the industry wants? It must be part of the story. And crypto is unlikely to regain the level of political influence it had a few months ago.

1. Via nocryptographer I talked with someone who works in book publishing, and they mentioned they get a lot of AI slop these days. I asked how they know what's human-written, and they said that there's one thing that will reveal AI slop without error, and that's the author not knowing their own creation. A real author can talk about their story for hours. They love to elaborate every character, every twist, every detail. Because those existed in their head long before they ever made it to the paper. They were loved before they were written. Al slop wasn't. It was just vomited into existence. Someone who generates their story with Al will never bond with their story the way real writers do. That's why they may not know what to say when they're asked why did the character do this, or even remember the scene in the first place. It's something they read, not something they wrote. And to a writer, those are not the same. There's a unique bond between the creator and the creation. If your writing doesn't come of you, you'll always lack that. I keep hearing soon we won't be able to tell. And perhaps, in a superficial sense, that's true. But there is a difference. It's not em dashes or repeated words. It's whether the story was made by someone who loves it and cares about it. If the writer's eyes light up when asked why did the character do that? and they start their very own Ted Talk about that specific scene... then it's real.
