and its not just the outside design: internally the live wire is the shortest straightest wire with the least amount of slack, while the neutral then the earth wires have increasing amount of slack and bend to them. So if something pulls down hard on the wireing to making it break, the live wire should break first, blowing the fuse and immediately cutting off power to the whole circuit.

CJ Bellwether (siege@octodon.social)'s status on Saturday, 27-May-2023 19:45:00 JST CJ Bellwether @andre fat but safe, and the wire goes downwards from the plug, so its very hard to pull out from the wall by tugging on the device. Meanwhile the wires inside are designed so the neutral and earth wires have extra slack, while the live wire is the shortest so if a wire is to be pulled free, its going to be the live wire breaking the circuit and the fuse.

CJ Bellwether (siege@octodon.social)'s status on Sunday, 28-May-2023 02:57:47 JST CJ Bellwether @niclas If the EU socket types didnt take type C Europlugs still, then theyd be decent, but they do, which makes them fire hazards. The EU voted ultimately against requiring all sockets europewide to change to new a singular type that didnt take type C Europeplugs and even if they had the plugtype they were debating still wouldnt have had the ability to turn the power off at the socket without touching a potentially live dangerous plug, have internal wiring failsafe or a fuse.

CJ Bellwether (siege@octodon.social)'s status on Sunday, 28-May-2023 02:57:48 JST CJ Bellwether @niclas naw, for safety. No other plug has as good internal wiring safety, a fuse, a power button at the plugsocket and required grounding for the circuit to become live.
ow it hurts when i step on them doesnt change that they're still the safest against electrical fires across the globe.

Not important in and of itself.... But I am irritated that many people claim "UK plug is best", without extensive experience with all types of plugs. I can't for instance speak of the Aussie one, but between UK, Europe and USA; USA clearly loses, and UK vs Europe is probably more a personal preference. -

Niclas Hedhman (niclas@angrytoday.com)'s status on Sunday, 28-May-2023 02:57:53 JST Niclas Hedhman @siege I just did my own little test;
4 different cables, dropped on floor 5 times;
All cables landed with pins down, at least once. 2 cables landed with pins up 3 times, 1 cable landed with pins up once, and 1 cable landed every time pins down.Perhaps there is a tendency with pins down. But compared to the standard European cable;
Type "straight" and most common; Unable to land with pins up.
Type "angled"; (don't have any) but I think they tend to land on there side, depending on cable shape -

CJ Bellwether (siege@octodon.social)'s status on Sunday, 28-May-2023 02:57:55 JST CJ Bellwether @niclas a staged demonstration? I just unplugged it and dropped it on the floor. Thats what happened.
The EU system is awful, all their plugs are backwards and cross compatible with the EuroPlug across the whole of the EU which many placesoutside of capital cities are still fitted with. Which means its not grounded.
You can plug a type C into a type F or a type E, or a type F or E into a type C and you have a nongrounded fire hazard, which happens constantly.
They messed up when they upgraded it but allowed you to still connect ungrounded old plugs.

I agree the UK system is better than USA. But the EU one is better.

CJ Bellwether (siege@octodon.social)'s status on Sunday, 28-May-2023 02:58:01 JST CJ Bellwether our curse for having good electric plugs was that our tvs were set for 25/50 not 30/60 fps.
So our sonic the hedgehog's catchphrase was "gotta go quicker!"

CJ Bellwether (siege@octodon.social)'s status on Sunday, 28-May-2023 02:59:18 JST CJ Bellwether Hello mastodon my old friend,
ive come to troll about plugs again.All the new EU plugs the F (german type) and the E (french type) are both backwards and cross compatible with the "Europlug" type C which doesnt have a grounding pin. So a type E/F can go in a type C socket and theres no grounding, or a type C plug can go in a E/F socket and theres no grounding.
Outside of the capitals many plugs are still type C, so no europe screwed the pooch when they upgraded.

CJ Bellwether (siege@octodon.social)'s status on Sunday, 28-May-2023 03:24:23 JST CJ Bellwether @goatsarah @niclas right so your point is that someone can jury rig with full knowledge they're doing something wrong the Type G socket to take a C plug. Rather than the type F socket which allows the type C without any sense that its dangerous.

If the appliance doesnt need the earth pin because its safe, the user doesnt need to know.
