and its not just the outside design: internally the live wire is the shortest straightest wire with the least amount of slack, while the neutral then the earth wires have increasing amount of slack and bend to them. So if something pulls down hard on the wireing to making it break, the live wire should break first, blowing the fuse and immediately cutting off power to the whole circuit.
