So like - what do you do when a user on an instance (noagendasocial.com) can see/interact with your content but you can't see/interact back?
This just happened and it was p alarming -- it turns out they are an actual nazi on an instance with a lotta nazi content.
I could see their replies to me on their instance page. They were unsearchable/unfindable/unblockable here AFAIK.
Do I just hafta deal with the occasional random unblockable nazi???

I have heard that there are nests of low lifes in the fediverse such as Detroit City Riot. They have every dysfunction.
Typically these get de-federated promptly. Presumably then they can't interact, although possibly they can still see your posts that might get to them via an instance that isn't blocking them.
I have never spotted anything like that. I gather from the nature of your work they look for you.

Luckily the admin of hoosier social is really cool ... but! This is a real problem that seems like a larger mastodon problem, right? Like I post publicly and I'm cool with that, but it seems Really Weird that a situation is possible where people can interact with my content and I can't block them and move on.

Can you block them? Definitely report if that option is available.

That is so weird. I learned about them through the fact that they were somehow replying to my toots via a user on another instance. I saw their handle in the replies and was just curious, initially.

They're suspended from my little instance, and I see they're also suspended on hoosier.social, which explains why you can't see their posts or search out their accounts. So they can't do their harrassment and intimidation on your timeline, which is both "working as designed" and cold comfort.

You heard right. There are lists of servers that harbor fascists and whatnot, which you can find on hashtag FediBlock. Mostly they're an island defederated from the rest of us.

They're not all nutjobs, but ranting seems to be the default mode there.
A few decades ago we had a visit from Special Branch on how to check for car bombs and were issued with telescopic mirrors. One or two people had been attracting the attention of some radicalised folk. One had a colleague in Bristol who had a bomb attached to his car.

Mosdef - I've had some scary moments in the past.
I've accepted being a local public figure - and enjoy having a platform (because frankly eff them).
I know there's a tradeoff with that and with personal safety and I've taken it.
I just think it's bad that people can interact with me in ways that I can't directly respond to in any way. And I can't imagine I'm the only person to experience this!

@thekitmalone @BlueDot to be fair this was early 80s, however there have been occasions where online aggression spills over into actual aggression.
For the most part I've found Mastodon to much more relaxed and reasonable, but evidently some need their angergasms.

@leighms The 80s? When people wanted to fork Audacity over telemetry and governance concerns just the other year, someone showed up in person with a knife in hand, which contributed to the Tenacity fork losing its lead person and running out of steam.
And that's just a prominently published case, not one of the many women and people from minorities who receive death threats online that can bridge into physical space.

I've received death threats in this way. I've also had people provoked into threatening me in person at my office, at work, and bringing guns to events that I've hosted. That's just counting the last legislative session.
This is a COMMON experience for trans people who do trans rights work in the U.S. I don't have a single colleague working at my level who hasn't been through it. It's not just some occasional fringe occurrence.
