This blog post by @signalapp is excellent. It talks about how there is "no such thing as global communication norms". Some features, such as stickers or voice memos are massively more popular in some regions than others.

This is something to take into account of what's going to happen if/when the fediverse starts to scale.

The tech industry–its products, conceptual frameworks, linguistic conventions, and cultural norms–is largely centered in the US (and, increasingly, China. On Twitter, people have their own communities, groups of people that form organically around a specific subject. But all these communities shared the exact same software: Twitter. What we've done with federation, is giving each of these communities their own servers, and the power to choose which software to run on, and alter it, if they so desire.

An example is emoji responses. The fediverse has a significant Japanese community that barely overlaps with the Western communities. Besides a few large Mastodon servers, the Japanese community is much more likely to use MissKey (another microblogging platform).

MissKey allows for emoji response on posts. If a MissKey user sends an emoji response on a Mastodon post, the Mastodon user only sees that they got a 'favorite', while other MissKey users see the specific emoji.

The interoperatibility is a solved problem, for now. But this will probably set of a discussion if Mastodon should also include support for emoji responses. I'm sure some would like it, but there is also a group of people who prefer a calmer interface, where just 'favoriting' is enough.

For emoji responses specifically, I'm sure that this is something that will be figured out.

But the core reason of why it popped up will stay, and will only get more intense. Our different cultures means we have different ways of how we prefer to communicate online.

Which is why I think the Signal blog is valuable to read. The more people from around the world will join the fediverse, the more diverse and different the platform becomes. What might seem obvious for you how the fediverse or Mastodon should work, is probably not obvious for someone on the other side of the world.

@kev It is with CalcKey. Have not personally tested Pleroma and Akkema, but reasonable sure they do.

@fediversereport out of interest, do you know if this is compatible with Pleroma's emoji reactions?

@gowin @signalapp @cendawanita yeah, I had no idea either. The idea that a netflix movie about stickers exists is just crazy haha.

Which is why I'm so fascinated by this: we're all on the same signal app, and still dont have a real idea of whats popular in other cultures. That effect is going to be so much stronger when were not even using the same app anymore.

      @fediversereport

Wow! I'm surprised to read that stickers are a big thing in some regions, resulting in a 200M in-app revenue for Line in 2020.

I use it occasionally, but never really thought about buying any.

Honestly, I wish I have more contacts using @signalapp, but nonetheless, still glad to talk to some contact s who use that exclusively.

@joeo10 @signalapp @matrix yeah I have high hopes for Matrix as well. I've tried Elements with bridges to WhatsApp and Signal, but that was still too buggy for daily use for me.

@fediversereport @signalapp Problem with this piece is that Signal is just too centralized and I wish they federate and opened up more. Also, this piece is good reading on why we can't trust them. Also look at the section called "What makes a good messaging platform". https://dessalines.github.io/essays/why_not_signal.html

      TLDR:
      1. Open Source
      2. (c) End to End Encryption
      3. Self Hosted
      4. Federated
      5. No required linkable identifiers

Signal only has one of those checked out.

@fediversereport @signalapp I believe that @matrix and #XMPP has the best shot in doing just that.

@sammy I think that is likely, yes. We're sort of starting to see that happen already: Nostr (a protocol somewhat similar to ActivityPub) is very focused on crypto, and is thus trying to separate itself from the fediverse, because they dont feel like that fits here. The bitcoinhackers.org mastodon instance recently shut down and moved to Nostr, specificially because they want to have a pro-crypto network.

@fediversereport I can see "the fediverse" as a microcosm of the Internet itself. If you think about it we already have a single shared I formation framework - html, css, javascript... And initially sites were very similar and now we have a bunch of walled gardens built around communities.

I worry we'll see the same with this, communities making their own instances and software that then start to become private... Anf we have a mini-Internet in the big Internet (the innernet?).
