WITH THAT SAID...
I KNOW it doesn't matter, but there's a side of me that is just REALLY HAPPY that I now have more followers here then on ANY social media platform I'm on. Especially after years of telling people how great this place is.

@Mrfunkedude I hear ya, I don't really care about follower numbers, for number's sake. What I care about is engagement. Not for clout, I couldn't give less fucks about that.
But because I'm lonely, and I want people to talk to. This place gives me that in a way that no other social media I've tried has. In large part because of the awesome #Today tag!

@Mrfunkedude I know it might be a pipe dream, but I'm kind of hoping that the whole clout aspect of social media and social media influencers doesn't come over to the fed of us too much. Within each respective fandom/peer group that I consider myself a part of, I definitely feel like I'm just happy to be where I am, with no real care of being front and center, deep in the mix.
Clout doesn't work for me, whether I try it on for size or I am on the receiving end of it.

@sbseltzer @Catwoman69y2k I don't consider that "clout". I consider it just gaining followers in order to sell your wares, which is 100% legitimate. Keep pushing on.
"Clout" to me is more some sort of "unearned respect" that we give people simply for being followed by a lot of people.
If you deserve your followers because you provide something useful, even if it's just a winning attitude, then keep doing what you're doing. I got no beef.

@Catwoman69y2k @Mrfunkedude I think it's totally fair to not like participating the whole clout chasing thing. I will say though that some of us convert that into our income so coming to the fedi having lost most of our followings and seeing people crap on the concept of clout struck me as inconsiderate and hurtful, especially as many of us were in a panic feeling uncertain how this was going to affect our ability to survive. :(

It seems to already have made it here, but it looks different than it did on the bird site. Corporations are going to have a hard time but influencers and indies should have a chance here if they can adapt to the new social dynamics.

@Mrfunkedude @Catwoman69y2k yeah that makes sense, but I just don't think that's how most people interpret clout. To a certain extent we do get focused on increasing certain numbers for their own sake, because followers can map directly to reach, which then has some kind of sales conversation rate. The sad truth is Twitter was never very good at that in the first place. The Fediverse could be even better in practice.

@Mrfunkedude ya know.. I don't even know how many, if any, followers. Just notice every once in awhile some notification will pop up saying so n so is following you.
I DO follow a few who seem "kindred spirits" in this vast fediverve, but mostly just toot my toots and interact with the interesting toots of others, both on my own little "home feed" but just as likely on the local n federated feed.
It's for all about the "social" of this social media to me. So HI and thanks to y'all for sharing.??

It's one of those weird mass media tools that got transplanted to social media without understanding it.
"Clout" and "reach" are "influence level" and "influence scope."
Both relate to the actual characteristic of "social presence."
The difficulty comes when the influence you're trying to measure happens outside of social channels.

"Be careful!" the man says. "I lost a contact lens."
So they look and look. After half an hour, the first guy asks, " You sure you lost it here?"
"Oh, no. I lost it in the alley but the light's better here."
Moral: It's hard to get the results you want when you don't do the thing that matters.

For years social media has used interaction as a proxy for engagement and engagement as a proxy for influence, conflating the terms until they become used interchangeably.
The reason is that it's easy to count interaction, less easy to count engagement, and almost impossible to get a metric on influence.
There's even a joke about it.
