    @BeAware @rzeta0 Is that partly because he's based in Germany, which has been very pro-Israel ( for obvious historic reasons), so maybe that's the water he swims in?

    Mstdn.social https://mstdn.social/about feels to me like a decent place to be these last 2 years. It's also based in Germany (so EU data protection), but I haven't noticed any over-zealous moderation in my little bubble. 500 character limit on posts, which encourages brevity. 😉

    Works fine for me, anyway

    YMMV as always.

    @KimSJ @TCMuffin Sure. But how?

    I grew up in a single parent family on a Welsh council estate. I've never voted to make people in similar situations worse off. But many of those same people do, not least with Brexit or the "red wall" voting for the Tories. This self-destructive nihilism seems especially strong in the UK, where FPTP justifies a sense that it doesn't matter who you vote for as the Mail-anointed candidate usually wins and nobody's listening to you anyway.

    What's your solution?

    @ianbetteridge Yes but in Ireland they were a nationalist party before independence but still attract Irish voters for their current platform.

    @ianbetteridge Scottish voters have so far managed to find reasons to vote for the SNP to run the devolved Scottish government. Why not just look at the manifestos that people voted for? In any case, the time to ask what the SNP is for, apart from independence, is surely after independence has been achieved.

    As for what nationalist parties do next, Sinn Fein seems to be doing well at securing people's votes in the Irish Republic and NI these days. You could just look at their manifesto too?

    @goatsarah Am I the only person who hears "hydrogen as fuel for aviation" and thinks "Hindenburg"?

    @danjac As long as the UK has FPTP and the Daily Mail, Europeans should be wary of basing long term strategic decisions on the UK's commitment to Europe, democracy or indeed rationality.

    UK may not be as bad as Hungary (which frankly needs to be fenced out of the EU and NATO), but it is definitely systemically vulnerable to Trump-style populism.

    After all, the current insane iteration of the Tories can still rely on 25-30% of the vote, and plenty of Leavers still think Brexit was a good idea.
