But he won’t let you pick him up for more than about 20 seconds and always settles near you but not on you

Our cats are very social but they’re not lap cats, nor do they like being picked up - something to do with missing out on human contact in their first few months (alley strays).

However Merry likes to sleep across my shins now in the night (no idea why that’s comfortable) and just now fell asleep draped across my forearm while I was patting him, leaving me in a really uncomfortable position that I of course could not move from until he was finished the nap. Ow

I love the temps & ease of install of the Thermalright Peerless Assassin CPU cooler I put in my wife’s new build, but I don’t love the subtle but noticeable fan whine. I’ve double checked they’re mounted in the right direction (no arrows on the fans, tsk), seems fine. May try shifting them a bit and if that doesn’t work, actually buy some decent fans - this cooler is very highly rated but also cheap as chips so I’m probably being a little unfair to expect Noctua / BeQuiet sound levels I suppose

There we go, cooler is off and IHS is all nice and cleaned off with some IA. This was a good chip at the time, I’m sure I can find a use for it somewhere

@dougbinks I just found something in one of my toolboxes, maybe it came with the machine years ago and I just kept it & forgot about it

AHA in one of my toolboxes I found a weird L-shaped Philips head screwdriver which is extra long. I don’t know if this came with the prebuild or not, it was too many years ago. But my principle of keeping any tool I ever find has paid off

Ha, not sure how I’m going to get the old giant heat sink off my wife’s old board for storage. This was a prebuilt machine so I’ve never had to deal with it before. It covers its own mounting screw and while there’s a helpful hole drilled all the way through, I don’t have a Philips screwdriver long enough to reach all the way down - it needs to be about 14cm long (insert lewd joke here)

Setting Windows up is mostly yelling “No! Piss off!” at the screen IME

Well, at least after all my sailor-level swearing today the new board / CPU / RAM / NVMe drive all seem to work fine. We’re both AM5 in the office now.

Now I’m just holding my nose and installing Windows 11, and seeing how far I can get down Marie’s giant list of things she needs reinstalling

@KeefJudge I guess they’re trying to prevent angled seating problems but this is the dumbest solution imaginable in 2024. Sure it worked with your Riva 128 when it was just a board with one little teeny fan on it but it makes zero sense now

I’d like to kick the person who invented PCIE card latches square in the family jewels. Incredibly dumb design - “I know, I’ll put the thing you need to press to remove a card directly underneath it! I’m a genius! GPUs won’t get constantly bigger to make this harder every time!” 😤

New board luckily has a lever extension but this is such a hack for a stupid POS design.

Found a tiny blob of thermal paste on the surface of the motherboard, wondering if this supposedly new motherboard with a missing manual is actually used. No other wings of wear though so perhaps it was just from a QA test

Printing off select pages from the online manual because I’m old skool. It’s just so much easier to find connectors on a diagram, because they squeeze acronyms with teeny tiny writing on a black board that sucks all light out of the case and my eyes can’t cope with that. Also they totally don’t tell you in the quick start which are the preferred memory slots which isn’t always a given

You cheap bastards Gigabyte, new motherboard I bought for my wife’s work PC doesn’t have a manual in the box, just a shite quick install guide that tells you nothing useful. 😡

@eniko when I multi-monitored I had one primary and one off to the side. When actually using that one gave me neck / back pain I got rid of it in favour of one larger hi res main monitor

@Doomed_Daniel @dotstdy maybe carve-off might be a better description, but they’re crazy priced compared to more useful x86 machines never mind similar ARM machines without that
